Kevin Hodur seconded. Motion passed unanimously. GUEST/PUBLIC COMMENT Information/Lynn Mahlberg, VP Academic Affairs & Student Services Lynn Mahlberg thanked faculty for the dedication and job that they do. She is very appreciative of the hard work GBC puts in. The Career Technical Academy from Las Vegas came for a visit the previous week and George Kleeb made a great statement. George reminded the students that the people you meet from college will have a lasting effect on you. Lynn mentioned that we may think about positive and negative things about college but we will remember the faculty and people we surrounded ourselves with. Lynn wants everyone to think about the difference that we make in the lives of students and thanked them for doing so. Lynn announced that Chris Marshall has been nominated for the outstanding advisor award. This award will be reviewed by a committee that includes a GBC representative. The committee will review applications from all of the NSHE institutions. Chris has been with GBC for 17 years. She has advised well over 2000 students. Lynn read Brett Murphys recommendations letter where he called Chris the godmother of career and technical education. Other positive things: FTE and head counts are up again. This is a good news to have before a legislative session. There was an increase in lower and upper division so total we have 1,934 FTE in comparison to 1,853 last year (4% increase). There is also an increase in the number of degree seeking students. Increase in over 100 non degree seeking students. GBC is also getting a large amount of dual credit enrollment. GBC has received 3 national awards in cost effectiveness. Kayla explained that we recently received #1 Online College in Nevada Lynn mentioned the College Fair loop starts on November 1st and the Community Career Fair will be held on November 17th. Lynn commented on the effectiveness of the 3 dean structure and reorganization. The deans have been meeting on a weekly basis. Lynn pointed out that GBC is very flexible and to contact her with any concerns. Lynn explained that the special board meeting today will mainly discuss the transition of the School of Medicine from UNR to UNLV. At the end there for should be a discussion of the institutions mission and dual enrollments. The Chancellor and Chair Trachok will be visiting GBC due to the presidential transition. No date has been set yet. Two things (budget wise) to keep an eye on for the next year are the Economic Forum in December and also the State of the State Address that the governor will be conducting in January. senate chair report Information/Possible Action Abstentions- John received some abstention history in EC. Roberts Rules of Orders states that no one is ever compelled to vote. An abstention is not a vote. It was said that administrative faculty in the past have been encouraged not to vote on academic issues. John stated that we are a single senate with both administrative and academic staff who vote on issues relevant to both areas. What Senate votes on are the recommendations from committees. The committees are made up of both administrative and academic faculties. These recommendations come to a full senate. Everyones vote counts and the expectation is that we are all well enough informed that we should be able to vote on every issue unless there is a true conflict. An abstention simply because of your faculty stance isnt warranted. We are working on these things together. John stated that we are in a time where we should trust each other and do what benefits the institution. Du asked what the bylaws said. John replied that the bylaws did not mention abstentions. No one is compelled to vote but John feels that with legislative session coming up we all need to support each other. Presidential Search- John presented the Qualities and Qualifications draft document (attached to packet) and is seeking more input. John feels that it is important to lay out our needs to the regents who do not understand our institution as well as we do. GBC needs someone to stand on Marks shoulders and move us forward. Cindy Hyslop asked if we had this document when President Curtis came to GBC. John said he would try to find the document. Glen Tenney asked if the list could be condensed. Glen feels that the longer the list the less important each item becomes. John responded that this is the draft and he does not disagree with that. Justine asked if this list will be included in the job search. John wants to formalize the document, approve it and provide it to the Chair of the Board of Regents to include in the documents they put together for their search. Please share any concerns with John Rice. He will send an email out but would like something put together and considered for the next meeting. Please turn in suggestions by the 10th of November so it can be presented at Executive Committee. Mid Cycle Evaluation- Available in packet. Please review Council of Chairs is still working on Intellectual Property Policy. Absentee Policy is also still being worked on. Subject of policy has to do with student absences and institutional sanctioned events. Certain departments may have different issues with attendance depending on accreditation. Working on Extraordinary Performance Policy. Some concerned that this could be used in lieu of merit. This award will not be a part of anyones base salary. Need to be sure that Faculty Senate is involved in process Whats Going on at GBC- David Freistroffer secured $100,000 grant for the purchase of powerful magnet used in biology research (NMR Nuclear Magnetic Resonance- provides visuals of atomic structure of molecules). Laurie Walsh just participate in the Great Basin Archeological Conference in Reno and finished the final report for the Great Basin Archeological Field School. At least 6 faculty members are working on their PHDs. Nursing students participated in drive by flu shot event. Students gave out nearly 500 flu shots at the hospital. Rad Tech facility was dedicated and opened early this week. Certification was received from the state.
