Adjuncts can now get Grant-in-Aid for the amount of credits they teach, regardless of what NSHE institution they attend. This item will go to BOR in December and it is expected to get full approval. Another item regarding part time instructors is that the salary target has been reaffirmed. The target is $1017.00 per credit, as funding permits. GBC is currently the second highest paying NSHE institution at $800.00, per credit. Cindy Hyslop stated that starting in 1996 the salary started to increase because GBC was the lowest paid. b) e-Learning Phase 1 Directives. Chair Theriault gave a brief overview. This phase involves remedial math and English. The chancellor has selectively taken the advice of the task force in those areas. Faculty need to be involved in this process. Input needs to be provided and sent through Carrie Bruno and Lisa Frazier. There has been good support on the remedial math element, especially with the stretch courses. Please review the report to learn about all of the little nuances. The NSHE system wide membership in NROC gives a plethora of resources. The committees recommendation is that its access for faculty shouldnt be mandated to use all of these resources. For the co-requisite, or stretch courses, all institutions within NSHE would welcome them and the task force is working on this, currently. Senate Chairs do have concerns on some areas and feel that faculty are being left aside. Chair Theriault reiterated that concerns will be heard. President Curtis has sent a letter to the Chancellor with specific concerns in several areas. The system wide registration system is a big concern for GBC, since GBCs largest campus is online. A question was asked about when phase 2 would be implemented. Chair Theriault stated that phase 2 is currently a ways off because it is still being worked on. In the Task Force recommendations, it was emphasized that faculty have to be involved in the consideration and construction. There are some sticking points to the LMS. In the phase 2 report, it is being recommended that the institutions stay with the Canvas system. The phase 2 report could possibly be out around March. A question was asked about vendor content. Carrie reported that, in the report right now, the third party/vendor content is one of the most contentious points. The majority of the committee members are recommending that faculty and subject matter experts be able to pick and choose whatever content they want. Chair Theriault will send out an update after the BOR Meeting, next week. c) Always Lost: A Meditation on War the exhibit will be coming down on Wednesday, November 26th at noon. If you havent had a chance to spend any time there, please do. If you are able to bring your students to see the exhibit, please do. committee reports Academic Standards Written Report Adjunct Faculty Verbal Report Heather Steel reported on the Part-Time Instructor Task Force. The committee is trying to determine the use of the term adjunct faculty vs. part-time instructor. Adjunct faculty is the term used in collective bargaining institutions. As new policies are being developed, all terminology is being changed to part-time instructor or part-time faculty. The committee would like to consider the name of part-time instructor. The change would bring GBC in line with the other institutions. Chair Theriault asked for any discussion on the name change. There was discussion and clarification that the adjunct faculty term is the term used in collective bargaining institutions, not part-time instructor. When searching in policy, part-time instructor and part-time faculty are used interchangeably throughout the policies. A question was asked if this was disempowering part-time instructors. Janie Moore, Adjunct Committee Chair, stated that she has discussed the change with Vice-Chancellor Crystal Abba and that the Vice-Chancellor recommended that the change be made to part-time instructor but, it is up to the institution. Janie stated that there has been more empowerment for the adjunct faculty by giving them better Grant-in-Aid and trying to get higher wages. The sense of the Adjunct Faculty Committee is that there are concerns on both sides of the fence. This has not been taken to all of the adjuncts, yet. The sense of the Senate was in favor of making the change to part-time instructor. This information will be taken to the in-service activities, in the fall, and discussed with the adjuncts. Assessment No Report Budget & Facilities Written/Verbal Report/Action Item Norm Whittaker reported that the committee has been tasked with the definition of student use for the equipment requests. The committee will go through NSHE policy to come up with an actual definition. This will be done next semester. VP Sibert has sent Norm the NSHE policy on what the money can and cant be spent on. This will bring GBCs policy in line with NSHE code. Norm commented on the written report and thanked everyone for working together to get to the request amounts down to the budget amount. Norm reviewed the equipment request list and brought forward a problem with item 19 that says see attached list. This list is attached to the equipment list handout available at todays meeting. This problem is a bug in the database and cannot be fixed. The equipment list can also be viewed online and everyone has the ability to view the equipment requests and see who has submitted requests. Norm reviewed the departments that made reductions to meet the budget amount. Chair Theriault called for a vote to approve the equipment requests. There was one nay, motion passes. Bylaws No Report Compensation & Benefits No Report Curriculum & Articulation Written Report/Action Item Jonathon Foster reviewed the courses for approval. 1. Requests to revise existing courses: IT 106, IT 210, IT 214, IT 216, IT 220, PEX 134, PEX 180. IT 106: Millwright and Process Terminology, 210: Failure Analysis and Predictive/Preventive Maintenance, 216: Basic Metallurgy, 220: Alignment Principles Course revision from fixed number of credits to variable (1 4 credits for IT 206, 210, 214, and 216. Change from 1 4 to 1 6 for IT 220) number of credits. Variable credit status sought to meet requirements of NCCER curriculum now in use. Change also recommended by advisory board. IT 214: Basic Electrical Theory for Industrial Technicians Same revision regarding change from fixed to variable credits as IT 106, 210, 216 and 220. Additional revision of course title from Basic Electrical Theory for Industrial Mechanics to Basic Electrical Theory for Industrial Technicians. This change is in line with industry standards. PEX 134: Rock Climbing Course revision from 1 to 2 credit course. This will allow more instructional time to be devoted to proper anchor set up and lead to safer outdoor experiences for students. Also the following revision to the course catalog description is requested: Current catalog description: Beginning rock climbing class: students will demonstrate safe and proper technique for belaying, including knots and basic anchor set up. Intermediate class: students are expected to have knowledge of basic skills so that they will be able to demonstrate safe, proper sport climbing, multi pitch commands, repelling skill, and proper anchor set up in climbing with a partner/s. Proposed catalog description: Rock Climbing is an introduction to the fundamentals of how to safely rock climb in the classroom setting and it transitions in intermediate skills that can be applied outdoors. From this course, students will gain an understanding of basic belay technique, rappelling, climbing knots, basic climbing anchors. The second half of the semester will include lead belaying and lead climbing skills. PEX 180: Strength Training Revision from fixed credit (1) to variable credit (1 2). This will align GBC with other institutions and NSHE Common Course Numbering system. Also, a course catalog description revision is requested: Current catalog description: This class provides safe and effective conditioning of the body through muscular fitness training. This is often done with weight lifting, but can be accomplished through a variety of exercises such as Pilates. Proposed catalog description: Get stronger, leaner, healthier! In class, students will execute weight and strength training moves with correct form, resulting in reduced body fat, increased lean muscle, improved muscle sculpting, and more efficient calorie burning. The 1 credit course is perfect for your busy schedule, providing an intense 30 minute, non stop workout for all major muscle groups. The 2 credit course notches up the strength training by meeting more frequently and for longer class sessions. This class can be modified for any fitness level. 2. The course will provide information regarding interacting with others in a pre employment setting, including how to create a resume and cover letter. This course will also prepare students to take the ACT WorkKeys Assessments to earn the National Career Readiness Certificate. BUS 114: Workplace Preparation (2 credits) Catalog Description: This course will prepare students for entrance into the technical workforce. The course will concentrate on effective communication in the workplace, including safety, customer service, interpersonal and business communications, electronic communication, work discipline, and working in teams. Students will focus on problem solving and critical thinking as it applies to workforce preparation. PEX 173: Circuit Training (1 2 credits) Catalog Description: This class is designed to burn calories, sculpt, and tone your entire physique. Students will move around the room to different stations, set up for high intensity interval training, strength training, and core training. Students will learn to execute conditions and weight training moves with correct form, showing increased strength and endurance. Class can be modified for most fitness levels Department Chairs Written Report/Action Item Cindy Hyslop reported that three prioritized faculty positions were voted on at the last Faculty Senate meeting, but was informed that only two positons are available. Department Chairs took another vote to prioritize two positions. The two positions that are being funded for are teaching positions. The positions previously voted on were Computer Technologies, Marketing and Management and a Reference Librarian. The new prioritized positions are Computer Technologies and Marketing and Management with the Reference Librarian placed on a 2015 priority wish list. The vote was tallied three different ways by the committee. Chair Theriault called for a vote on the new prioritized list. A roll call vote was taken, there were 11 yes, 6 no, 3 abstentions. Motions passes. Distance Education Written Report Faculty & Administrative Evaluations Verbal Report Stephanie Davis gave an update on the teaching evaluations. At the beginning of the year, the committee was asked to revise the current teaching evaluation form because it was not going to work for evaluation purposes. The Evaluation committee and the subcommittee have been working on the revision. Three things the committee knows: 1. Must move from current online form to a spreadsheet. 2. The form is going to be simplified by putting the information into packets or chunks of activity instead of using points, and 3. It will be much clearer when you look at the form. The committee is still working on how to score the evaluation and how the IDEA scores will fit in the score. The committee is also waiting on overall rolls and narrowing down the packets of activities. The committee is hoping to have a rough draft in the New Year. Expect implementation fall of 2015. Faculty/Staff Safety Written Report Gen Ed Ad Hoc Committee Written/Verbal Report/Action Report Tom Reagan reported that the Gen Ed committee has been following the 5 year plan that was put in place in year 3 and they have been reviewing Gen Ed objectives. At the last Faculty Senate meeting, the committee brought forward personal wellness. They examined technological understanding, this past month, and the decision rule they are trying to use is; first, should it be an objective, the committee feels that yes, it should be. The next thing, is it at a foundation discipline level where it should remain a credit item on the Gen Ed grid or is it better served as a program specific objective. With technologic understanding, the committee decided that it is still important enough to the institution that they want it to remain on the grid. However, similar to what the Nursing department has done with the BSN, programs can ask for the three credit waiver from the grid. The BAS has 18 credits. The committee is looking to see if this still fits for GBC. Not all institutions require upper division Gen Ed. The committee anticipates bringing either an informational item of what has been decided or an action item, if it warrants a change. Two action items were then brought forward. The first item is a recommendation to change the definition of the General Education objective Personal/Cultural Awareness to: Understand the diversity of individuals in society, the development of human societies, and the significance of creativity in the human experience. The previous wording was: Understand the roles of individuals in society, the development of human societies, and the significance of creativity in the human experience. The second action item is to approve BUS 113 for one credit and BUS 114 for two credits. BUS 113 would be used for the Human Relations Gen Ed component for the Certificate of Achievement and BUS 114, in conjunction with BUS 113, would be used for the Human Relations component in the AAS.
