Vice Chair Freistroffer reminded the Senate of the Thursday, 5:00 pm proxy deadline, due to the change in the time of the Senate meeting. Vice Chair Freistroffer brought forward an item requested by the Technology Committee to get a sense of the Senate. Changing from GroupWise email to Gmail. Dwaine Hiles reported that there have been several requests to move to Gmail. Some of the reasons are: storage is limited with GroupWise email, Gmail offers free email for higher education, 25 gig storage, document storage and can collaborate storage, groups can be created, and calendars can be shared. There would also be less time managing Gmail. SCS has moved to Gmail and other colleges around the state are also considering moving. A question was asked about email addresses and how they would be set up. If a conversion happens, it is up to the institution to determine how the addresses would be set up. Another question was asked about the cost, since business cards would have to be changed. Dwaine didnt have a cost estimate at this time. Gmail should interface better with mobile devices. The domain will be gbcnv.edu and you will no longer use Gmail in the address. Files can be transferred over to Gmail. This would be a time consuming transfer but can be done. A comment was made that Gmail would be slower and not as intuitive but another person mentioned the opposite. There was a question asked whether there would be an overlap when changing over the email. The College has purchased a Gmail module to create and migrate accounts. The current GroupWise email system will be left in place for a period of 6 months or longer. Dwaine was not sure if proxies are used in Gmail. A faculty member commented that Gmail works a lot better from home. Archived email would have to be restored to GroupWise and moved to Gmail. If anyone has questions, they can speak with SCS. Computer Services will have issues worked out before the change is made. The sense of the Senate was to move forward with the change. committee reports Academic Standards No Report Adjunct Faculty No Report Assessment Written Report Budget & Facilities Written & Verbal Report Norm Whittaker reported that the deadline for equipment requests has been changed to October 1st 2012. The committee was allotted $400,000 for equipment and the committee received $800,000 in requests. The committee has made their decisions and has sent them to Presidents Council for approval. Results will be sent to faculty senate as soon as the approval comes back from Presidents Council. Norm also reported that there is a lot of surplus equipment on campus and a surplus sale has been tentatively scheduled for June 9th. Please email Dorinda with a list of any surplus equipment you might have. Compensation & Benefits Written Report Curriculum & Articulation Written/Action Report Mary Doucette brought forward an action item to move THTR 102 from Fine Arts to English/Communications. This has been approved by the English department. A motion was made to accept the change. All were in favor, motion passes. Department Chairs Written Report Distance Education Written/Verbal Report John Newman reported that the committee has been tasked with coming up with recommendations for online courses to help satisfy accreditation requirements. There were some technical problems that prevented John from finishing his report so Susanne Bentley gave an overview of the requirements. There was a long discussion about adjuncts and over seeing adjunct teaching quality. There was discussion about volunteer oversight by department faculty and mandatory department chair over sight. It was suggested that departments follow up with adjunct instructors to make sure they are following thru with students and possibly have access to the online class. There needs to be some oversight and consistency with online classes. There is a concern about a seven day turn around time for homework to be graded and back to students. There is no requirement of LiveNet for online classes. There needs to be a collaboration tool for the student to contact the instructor. Scott Nielsen mentioned that there is a new regulation for online classes, from the Department of Education, due to online fraud that has taken place. Financial Aid does not have to be paid until students have taken a test or turned in a paper to show they are actually in the class. John asked the Senate to please look at the recommendations and give the committee feed back on them. These are things that will be required for accreditation. Cathy Fulkerson reported that on the IR website there is a report that shows a survey, from graduates of GBC, and how satisfied they are with their GBC experience. Discussion with departments was recommended.
