He is not in favor of financial exigency or consolidation of colleges. Kevin talked about the budget and that the legislators need our support. Regent Melcher answered questions from the Senate. Frank Daniels asked about awarding or postponing tenure. Regent Melcher has not heard anything about tenure not going through; he does support tenure. Frank also asked about sabbaticals. Regent Melcher has not heard any comments about sabbaticals and believes in the process. Cindy Hyslop asked about consolidation. Regent Melcher doesnt see any savings with consolidation of the colleges. Bonnie Hofland asked about absorption of programs. Regent Melcher believes in collaboration and looking at having combined degrees, within the system, as opposed to eliminating degrees. 60/120 The Chancellor has asked all Faculty Senate Chairs to report on their progress on the plan. Chair Negrete reported to the Chancellor that it has been discussed but a plan has not been put in place. She also reported to him that our AA & AS degrees are at 60.5 and the bachelor degrees are a mixsome with 120 and some over 120-- but that all degrees would be looked at. Chair Negrete asked the Chancellor if the AAS degrees are included in the plan or if they could be exempt as a whole; she did not receive a response. If there are accreditation issues with the number of degrees, that is exempt. A lot of our AAS degrees are more industry driven than accreditation. Other institutions are making progress and are asking for a phase-in period. It has not been determined if the plan has been mandated. The other issue in the plan is the low yield. Faculty Senate Chairs asked to have this put on hold indefinitely but it was declined. committee reports Academic Standards No Report Adjunct Faculty No Report Assessment Written Report/Action Item Linda Uhlenkott brought forward an action item following a recommendation from the General Education Review last spring. The Assessment Committee proposes that all general education classes must include the communications objective and the critical thinking objective. Faculty teaching the class must also include one of the remaining three objectives: personal/cultural awareness; personal growth and responsibility; technological understanding. Glen Tenney asked if this is approved today, would the changes be available on the website. Linda stated that, if approved, it would have to go to Presidents Council and then the change would be made. Frank Daniels asked if you would have to meet all but one of the objectives and if there is a ranking. Linda stated that currently all five objectives have to be included and there is degree ranking. Continuing the ranking has not been decided. Dale Griffith asked about Personal Growth. Linda answered that this is the reason faculty asked to be able to choose from the three objectives. A lot of times, you can work personal growth in easily. Some people believe that whatever a student learns is personal growth. Bonnie Hofland asked about all of Gen Ed courses coming back to assessment. The answer is no, all Gen Ed classes would have to include critical thinking and communications. Then the faculty member would choose one of the other three and those would have to be included on the syllabus. Susanne Bentley talked about the reasons for revamping Gen Ed. Chair Negrete asked if everyone would have to put their syllabi thru C & A again, checking for the criteria. Linda doesnt think so. Chair Negrete asked for a motion to approve, a motion was made and seconded. A roll call vote was taken. There were 22 ayes, 20 abstentions, 1 nay. Motion passes. Budget & Facilities Verbal Report Richard Barton reported that the equipment money has been awarded. Dream It! Do it! The Nevada Manufacturers Association and the Northern Nevada Development Authority have come to the college and have asked the college to help out with this initiative. Dream It! Do It! wants to do an inventory of all technical skills that are out there and put an initiative together. This initiative would identify students from 9th grade through higher ed, identifying the paths and strengthening the paths so that students would be ready for the work force. This program is statewide. The Maintenance Training Cooperative or MTC Scholarship night will be March 3rd from 7-9 pm at all campuses. The scholarships are $5,000 each and 68 scholarships were awarded last year. This year there will be entrance criteria that must be met. The students will have to have three letters of reference, a resume, and have completed placement tests. Phil Smith asked if non -scholarship students can take the CTE classes. Answer is yes. The MTC program is just the scholarship program. The CTE program is open to anyone; however, the MTC application is also part of the CTE application for the entrance criteria. All students fill out the MTC application. The program is capped at 16 students per section. The cap is budget and safety involved. The deadline is April 1, but students can still apply after the deadline. Bret, Kris Miller, Lynn Mahlberg and Jeannie Rosenthal are working on a grant for TAACCCT, which is the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant from the Dept of Labor. The grant is about 2 million dollars and it is being tied to Complete College America. There are four initiatives within the grant: accelerated graduation rates, improved retention rates, and building programs that demand and strengthen online programs.
