Approval of minutes: Action A motion was made and seconded to approve Faculty Senate Minutes from the May 14, 2010, meeting. There were 8 proxies recorded. The motion passed unanimously. senate chair report: Information BOR code changes Chair Negrete reported on the code change, which allows a 6% salary cut. The BOR is allowed to give the faculty a 6% salary cut, whether or not the faculty member is tenured. With the previous budget cut, tenured faculty could opt for a 4.6% salary reduction or teach a percentage of classes for free. This new code change will prevent these options from happening again. The BOR can now give tenured faculty a pay cut without declaring a financial exigency. The BOR can do a pay cut capped at 6% for the biennium. Clarification was given that the 6% cut would not be in addition to the 4.6% that has already been cut. Health care benefits Chair Negrete spoke about the proposed cuts to health care. The Board for Health Care had to put together a budget with requested cuts in it, and health care benefits were among the cuts. Before the cuts can actually happen, the legislature must approve them. It was said that in the last legislative session that there were drastic cuts that were not granted. Faculty senate chairs voted to appoint Chris Cochran, from UNLV, to represent us on the committee. Committee chairs Chair Negrete thanked the committee chairs for chairing the committees. Election of Senate Secretary With the beginning of the academic year, a Senate Secretary needs to be nominated. This position is in charge of keeping track of time and keeping the meeting on track. Frank Daniels mentioned that the secretary would advise the senate on proper policies. A motion was made and seconded to nominate Frank Daniels as the senate secretary. Frank accepted the nomination. The senate voted, and all were in favor. Motion passed. Senate Chair discussion Carrie Bruno has stepped down as Senate Vice Chair. Chair Negrete was informed that the Senate Chair could continue as the chair for two years. The senate executive committee agreed to have Chair Negrete for two years, as stated in the bylaws. Secretary Daniels confirmed that the chair does remain chair for two years. With no objections from the Senate, Chair Negrete will remain Senate Chair for two years. Introduction of new faculty Chair Negrete introduced Gary Chidester as the new millwright instructor. Karen Kimber has been hired to work in grant management. John Brown has been hired as a full time instructor in diesel technology. Brandy Nielsen is visiting the Senate today. Brandy is the Assistant Foundation Services Coordinator. Stephanie Davis was introduced as the new psychology instructor in the Social Services department. Chair Negrete announced that Paulette Batayola is still the SGA President. Proxy votes The deadline for proxy votes is 11:00 a.m. on the Friday of Faculty Senate. Nomination for adjunct representatives. Chair Negrete reminded the Senate that two adjunct faculty will need to be nominated as senate representatives. Chair Negrete confirmed with Secretary Daniels the proper procedures for selecting the representatives. Chair Negrete asked the Senate to confirm with the prospective adjunct instructor, their willingness to serve as a representative, and bring their names to the next Faculty Senate meeting. Representatives will be voted on at the next Faculty Senate meeting. committee reports Academic Standards Verbal Report The committee has not yet met this semester. After graduation, there was a grade appeal by a student. The student went to the professor and discussed the grade and the instructor did raise the grade. The student still did not agree with the grade and filed a formal appeal. The committee upheld the grade the professor gave, and the student has appealed to Dr. McFarlanes office. President Diekhans asked that Chair Negrete get the facultys opinion. Our technical school colors are sage green and metallic gold. In 2005, GBC considered adding a sports program but sage green uniforms could not be found. Students voted to change the color to forest green, but the students did not go through the proper channels to officially change the colors. Another issue about color is that the college colors need to be uniform so that all correspondence, catalogs, etc., going out, will be consistent in color. Frank gave some history on choosing the college colors. Rich Barton mentioned that if the students would like forest green, then it should be forest green. The faculty then agreed. Bonnie Hofland reminded the faculty that INT 100 is tomorrow and asked that the staff be in the gym at 2:30 to set up their tables.
