Vice Chair Sarah Negrete will be attending the meeting since it has been set on the same day as the December Senate meeting. committee reports Academic Standards Written Report Adjunct Faculty Written Report Assessment No Report Budget & Facilities No Report Bylaws No Report Compensation & Benefits No Report Curriculum & Articulation Verbal Report It was reported that the committee met and disbursed funds for professional development. There were eight individuals requesting travel money, totaling $2,500. It leaves a balance of $2,500 for future appropriations. The deadline to submit an application for travel is January 30, 2010. Department (Dept.) Chairs Written Reports w/Action item A member from the Ad hoc Committee that was formed by Dept. Chairs submitted its proposed changes for the INT 100-Orientation course. It was the committees recommendation to split duties between Student Services and Academic Affairs. The motivating factor is to give more control over what will be communicated to students about academic issues. The class has been scheduled to be taught on January 23, 2010, with a morning and an afternoon session. The morning session would meet as a group with Student Services. All students would receive the same message, e.g., student conduct, disability support services, graduation requirements, along with other basic issues. The afternoon session will be taught by Dept. Chairs. The four hour session would give departments enough time to address specific topics that faculty wish to cover. The committee provided a general outline/list of scheduled topics that would be covered. The new format is projected to provide maximum flexibility and allow departments to have more control over the information students receive. The outlying campuses would maintain the choice of what would be presented to their students. The instructors will be compensated for their time. It was questioned how instructors would be compensated for their time. It was thought to be in exchange for a day during in-service. The senate was unsure what they were voting on. The senate was being asked to determine whether they wanted the responsibility for INT 100 Orientation course be divided between Student Services and Academic Affairs, with a morning and afternoon session or whether they wanted to retain INT 100 Orientation as it had been previously presented for the fall semester. A member of the senate stated that they were against the manner in which it had been proposed. They further objected to the exit ticket and structured syllabus. It was felt that students can be asked to obtain a student I.D. card, a library card, etc., but to fail a student for not performing those requests was convoluted. The spokesman from the Ad Hoc Committee stated that it was the intent to de-convolute the process. It was hoped that the new process would also allow campuses, departments and interest areas to have more flexibility. It was questioned who would be in charge and how would the coordination of departments and their instructors take place. The proposal states that the large subject matters, e.g., Health Sciences, Education, etc., would split into groups and run orientation sessions. They would be held in large classrooms with IAV accessibility. The off-site campuses would be responsible for advising their students regarding the best IAV sessions to take to fit their interests and needs. It was proposed to have five IAV rooms set-up to offer the off-site campuses accessibility. A faculty member stated they were not entirely convinced that the INT 100 course was actually needed and if it really benefited students. The representative from the Ad Hoc Committee stated that it has been gleaned from reviewing evaluations from other INT 100 classes that students do need to know what college is all about, plus it offers the opportunity to address other specific issues. Further discussion took place over what departments would actually be covering in the afternoon sessions. The senate was advised that weekly focus reports would be generated. The reports will provide enrollment information and they will also provide students degree choices. Once again, a senate member questioned what they were voting on. The senate was being asked to determine whether they wanted the responsibility for INT 100 Orientation course to be divided between Student Services and Academic Affairs, with a morning and afternoon session, or whether they wanted to retain INT 100 Orientation as it had been previously presented for the fall semester. A motion was made and seconded to approve the new INT 100 Orientation class as presented by Department Chairs. A roll vote was taken. There were 22-Yes votes, 23-No votes and one abstention. The motion failed.
