Their grant submission was to support and pay for tuition and books for dual credit opportunities in Hawthorne. They were recently notified that the grant was approved. Many of their students are from low-income families and this is a beneficial opportunity to remove barriers for advanced students to get a jump-start on college. Hawthorne is one of our new service area sites and are very excited to be on board with GBC. Thank you, Lisa C.! 2. Computer Technologies department will have Open House every Friday for students to learn about their programs. They offer treats and drinks! Thank you, Cindy. 3. The library did a short survey of patrons last spring. One thing that stood out in the survey is how awesome we are. All feedback about staff was not just positive, it was super positive. Not one survey participant ranked or 'said' anything negative about the staff in the library. Not one! We now have an area set up in the library for retro, ol' skool arcade games for folks to play. It is a computer set up to play old arcade type of games (pacman, qbert, etc.) on a flat screen TV. We are working on a way to provide this to the rest of the GBC community (like providing links to the open-access video games we are using at the library facility to share with online students). The library has more laptops available for checkout now! Thank you, Eric. 4. A Midsummer Night's Dream, opening October 20, running through October 24. Thank you, John! 5. I would just like to mention how the hoop house started the beautiful flowers that have been seen around campus. Not to neglect the AMAZING vegetables that I know many people were able to enjoy all due to the efforts of George Kleeb. Thank you, Brandy! 6. Radiology went to a 4th grade class with their skeleton. The students learned all about bones! The biggest hit was when the mandible feel off the skeleton, they all thought it was funny. No worries the jaw bone has been reattached. I told the students it fell off because it was talking too much on the way over there. Also told corny jokes. What is a skeletons favorite drink? 7. SGAs and the Library are sponsoring the Zombie Apocalypse on October 28th! Thank you, Demarynee. 8. As of January of 2016, the GBC Teacher Education Program will offer a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with an Early Childhood Endorsement. The revision and reinstatement of the endorsement was a collective effort on behalf of the GBC Education Department. The students who have been working on AA's in Early Childhood Education are excited about the smooth move towards a BA that supports what they have already been studying. The alignment of the AA and the BA will also support our service area districts as grant funding has been allocated to open and operate preschools classrooms attached to elementary schools. It is an exciting venture to give this opportunity to our students and the schools we serve. Thank you, Lynette and Theresa. 9. The Gay and Straight Alliance (GSA) had a strong turnout to the pizza party at the Clock Tower yesterday, with students, faculty and administration participants. The mission of the SGA is to foster a positive and accepting community for students of all orientations and identities in a safe environment. Everyone is Welcome! Look out for more fun and exciting events coming in the future! Thank you, Lynne and Josh. 10. The Nursing group is gearing up to show off the two wonderful new sites (Winnemucca and Pahrump) to the ASEN accreditation team in November. GBC Nursing is branching out and doing what GBC does best by accommodating rural Nevada students! Thank you, Heidi! 11.
