Highlights of Distance Education Committee are outlined below. Publisher materials vs. homegrown material Mike is concerned about canned courses using only publisher material Lisa One instructor is using a publisher site instead of Webcampus. This particular publisher site provides quality resources, better than the instructor can create on her own. GBC couldnt create the material with the resources our own resources. The instructor uses email instead of communicating through WebCampus. The Help desk receives numerous calls about class not being on WebCampus. Kathy suggests using Webcampus as a portal with instructions on how to access the publisher site. Lisa states that compared to the rest of NSHE we use very few publisher based courses. Instructor interaction is what is important and generally, GBC online courses contain a lot of instructor-student interaction. Discussion concerning a standard for using WebCampus (as a portal) because helpdesk cannot support additional LMSs. Lecture Capture Discussion concerning student and faculty protection regarding the use of Lecture Capture. Discussion concerning privacy, FERPA, and Academic Freedom regarding the use of Lecture Capture. There is some confusion about whether instructors can delete and edit lecture capture content. Lisa is meeting with the NSHE lawyer to discuss when Instructors have the ability to delete and edit lectures. Bob there needs to be a policy regarding the recording of lecture capture and technical backup for IAV. How long are the copies kept? It is up to the faculty member to determine how long lecture capture is kept? Currently no archives being made. This policy ties into section 2c. Establishing Minimum Standards for Online classes: Suggestions on what to include in the minimum standards: Expectations for Publishing Courses at the beginning of the semester. 40-50 sections of classes were not published by 8am on the first day of the semester. Help Desk overloaded with calls. Faculty members not ready to publish Reduce barriers for students Students expect the classes to be available at 12:01am on the first day Specific examples for online vs. live vs. IAV Expectations for response to email and grading Lisa presents the WebCampus disaster recovery plan Three servers throughout the country.
