The committee reviewed and unanimously approved procedures for committee membership and responsibilities. The VPAA suggested the committee formalize procedures last spring. See the attached document. 2. The committee discussed pre-requisites for upper-division science courses and upper-division course enrollments for science. An upper-division course on genetics has been problematic in terms of enrollment and some members of the science department would like to see BAIS NR students complete lower division requirements prior to enrolling in the BAIS NR which would necessitate a return to the associates being required prior to enrollment in the program. Members advised that changing the application procedure from an associates required to open has enabled better advisement and tracking of students and suggested a broader discussion of the matter in the science department. BAIS COMMITTEE PROCEDURES Serving the Bachelor of Arts Integrative Studies Program with emphases in Natural Resources and Social Science Function of the committee: The BAIS Committee serves to steer the Bachelor of Arts Integrative emphasis areas in natural resource and social science. The committee makes decisions regarding committee composition, program supervision, curriculum, catalog changes, course substitutions, and other business deemed pertinent to functioning of a program. The committee is required to meet at least once a semester. Structure of the committee: There are eight standing members of the committee. Voting members (six total): Two program co-supervisorsone each for the natural resources and the social science emphasis areas. Four faculty memberstwo upper-division core-course teaching faculty in the science department and two upper-division core-course teaching faculty from the social science department. Core-courses are defined here as upper-division requirements in each emphasis area. Non-voting members (two total): The Director of Admissions and Records and VPAA serve as ad hoc members of the committee whose function is to offer advice on matters related to curriculum, impacts to other programs, and other college-level issues. Supervisor and Committee Member Selection: The emphasis area supervisors are nominated by the committee and then appointed by the VPAA. One supervisor oversees the Natural Resource program and the other oversees the Social Science program. To qualify to serve as program supervisor, a faculty member must teach in a core area (defined here as required upper-division science or upper-division social science courses) for the program to be supervised. In addition, a faculty member has to have first served on the committee for two consecutive years just prior to the appointment as supervisor. A normal term for service as a supervisor is two-years, but supervisors can serve an additional two-year term if the committee agrees. A four-year term is the limit. At this point a new supervisor must be appointed. Program Supervisors are generally selected to serve in a spring semester meeting of the committee. In the case of extenuating circumstances or emergencies, protocols may be temporally changed. Program supervisors, in consultation with departments and current committee members, select two faculty members from both the science and social science departments. Faculty committee members eligible to serve must teach in areas that form upper-division core required components for each program. Faculty members serve at least two-years, consecutively. In order to maintain institutional memory, it is highly desirable that once program supervisors step down, they serve on the committee in an advisory capacity for at least two years. This provides the historic depth needed to conduct business. Please note that there may be times when certain events require a shift in protocol. If this happens, the entire committee will take up the issue to decide the best action. BAIS Committee Interaction with Departments: The BAIS Committee is an independent body that is tasked with steering the Natural Resource and Social Science emphasis areas of the BAIS. The committee is independent of departments, including those departments that teach a majority of core program requirementsin this case the Science and Social Science departments. The committee, or the appropriate segment of the committee (Science or Social Science members), consults with the portions of a department (typically faculty involved with core requirements) that are relevant to an issue on an as-needed basis; departments certainly weigh-in on decisions and needs, but departments do not make decisions or determine activities for the BAIS. Committee decisions are ultimately approved by the VPAA. Outside Review: The BAIS program and both of its emphasis areas will be reviewed every 5 years. The review will include two external reviewers, one for each emphasis area, who will each prepare a short report on the emphasis areas. ?
