One of its purposes is to bring quality programming to GBC. It can also be used to pay a coordinator who will help us with programming duties. She urged us to start thinking about long-term planning, which will be easier now that we will have a reliable budget and will know that we have funds we can use. The grant will utilize a series of yearly themes, under which we will group our programs. It was emphasized that not all programs will have to fit the annual theme. Gail Rappa noted that it may be more practical to have themes that run for two years instead of a different one every year. That will allow for more continuity and enable us to plan for bigger projects which may take more time than one academic year. The ACE Committee will be involved with the Humanities in Action aspect of the grant, and we were asked to help write the strategic plan and come up with ideas having campus-wise possibilities. Were looking for themes that will enable us to offer Humanities across the Curriculum ideas. As a conservative estimate, the endowment started by the NEH grant should provide $60,000 per year. Cyd would like us to find an inexpensive way to offer humanities programming this year, with more funding becoming available next year when we begin to receive the grant funding. TED talks were recommended by the group as a good option. Weve had several of these evenings in the past, and theyve been well-attended and inexpensive. Cyd also asked that we send her any ideas for annual themes. The Art Shows reception was well attended. It will be up until 11/15. The next show will be the student/faculty/staff show. The opening reception will be 11/22. We discussed having wine or beer at the reception in an effort to increase attendance. We discussed having a theme for the spring show or for Argentum. We dont want to limit participation, but would like to unify the result. The first spring show will go up 12/20 and be shown until late March. Its from the Nevada Arts Council, and is called Geographical Divides. In addition, it will also feature Laura Albertis clock-related art from her Of Time and Place work. Next fall, also from the Nevada Arts Council, we will feature Wallys World: The Loneliest Art Collection in Nevada. Frank Sawyer reported on his Bard in the Yard performances at Duncan Little Creek. Three of the five performances were standing room only. They were set up to seat 45, and the final performance had 89 in attendance. The museum has asked that additional performances be offered at their venue. Frank and his troupe are seeing if that can be done. Angie asked for help with ticket sales and evaluation handouts for the Chris Proctor concert. Karen Kimber reported the film committee is considering a Spanish film this year. Angie will get her contact information for the Latinos Uniting Nations Association (aka LUNA) president, Alfredo Jaimes. Alfredo may know if the Hispanic community would be interested in this and possibly have a suggestion for a film. Justine may transfer to the film festival committee. Were going to explore using Facebook polls to ask users if they would be interested in certain upcoming programming possibilities. Well get a sense of what may or may not be well attended. Angie was contacted about offering PechaKucha programming. Its similar to TED talks. We will explore the possibility. Richter-Uzer contacted us about returning to GBC. They would like to come in the fall of 2014 or the spring of 2015. The committee enthusiastically approved the idea. Angier has contacted Jeannie to see about getting a grant to pay for them. Their fee is $3000. Justine volunteered to be in charge of putting together a TED event this fall. It will be in October or November. She will also contact LUNA to see if they are interested in providing refreshments and helping to get students to attend. Justine will send the committee some links to TED talks to consider viewing.
