The new statement would replace the current policy for online and enhanced courses that use lecture capture. The old policy would remain in place for IAV only. In addition to having the statement posted in classrooms, Albrecht encourages faculty to add the statement to the syllabus. Bob is concerned about the new statement not matching up with current policy. The committee wonders if we should get a sense of the Senate instead of immediately requesting an action item to replace the old policy. Lisa suggested asking Executive Committee for advice. *At Executive Committee, Chair Freistropher proposed skipping the Sense of the Senate and going directly to an action item. The committee agrees to provide the Senate with educational materials about lecture capture because many faculty are unfamiliar with the technology. There is increasing demand for the use of lecture capture (a system that can provide synchronous live/online lectures). Distance education is considering obtaining three more units with the humanities grant. They can be used in any classroom not just IAV rooms with a cost of ~$15,000 per unit. Distance Education is considering a studio set-up for asynchronous capture (meaning, the instructor records the lecture without a class full of students). Ideas for moving standards forward: The committee is working on a new policy regarding standards for GBC classes. Lisa and Carrie will present the new standards to Mike McFarlane. Based on a recommendation by Jim, Standard 3.5 was reworded. Self-assessment and mentorship are now included in the General Statement section. Impact of new schedule blocks: Administration is looking into new ways of organizing scheduling blocks. Six and eight week blocks are being considered. The blocks will impact coding in WebCampus and depending on the length of the blocks will likely impact retention rates. 4 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) Lisa was approached by Canvas to teach a MOOC in Educational Technology starting in April. The course will offer optional GBC credit. The Regents and the Chancellor are interested in learning more about MOOCs and will be following Lisas progress. Lisa believes it is good practice to follow a business model when choosing the courses made available for MOOCs. There must be a demand for the course for broad-reaching program requirements or Continuing Education credits. The greater the demand, the greater the financial success.
