We discussed the changes in Faculty Senate and how this will be addressed in the department. The voting Faculty representatives approved by the department are: Tami Gailey and Mary Doucette. Tami and Mary will make a report at each department meeting and listen to any concerns of the department to take back to Faculty Senate. The group was told they could attend Faculty Senate meeting if they want and comment in the Public Comment portion. Faculty Senate report was added to our monthly department meeting agenda. We have a new Practice Lab Coordinator, John Bain. He has written an Practice Lab manual and will set up the simulations for the instructors. The travel budget was discussed in detail, due to the reduction in funds. Faculty is to send Kris all travel requests, so monies could be allocated. Social networking policy needs to be established. Some students have formed a Facebook study group. We as a department are not opposed to these, but want to make sure and stakeholders are protected. Kris sent the policy to the GBC attorney for review. PROGRAM UPDATES: EMS PROGRAM REPORT Our program adjunct primary instructor has resigned effective August 24, 2012. We are currently recruiting for instructors to assist in an upcoming course. Course information: Scheduled for fall: EMT Intermediate 85 fall semester 14 students registered Heartsaver First Aid CPR course I am currently working to update our course offerings in anticipation of the changes proposed by the State of Nevada as they move toward adopting the new National EMS Scope of Practice. It is expected that the adoption of the new scope will occur during the upcoming legislative session. These changes will increase program hours for all of our course offerings. There will also be an opportunity to offer bridge programs to help current EMTs cross to the new levels. NURSING REPORT With graduation marking the end of the 2011-2012 academic year, 15 BSN students and 20 AAS nursing students received their degrees and moved on to new careers or career advancement. Sixty percent of the graduating associate degree nursing students applied to and were accepted directly into the BSN program for Fall 2012. Twenty new students were admitted to the ADN program this fall with 17 in the second year of the program for a total of 37 AND students. A total of 19 new students were admitted to the RN to BSN program, with 27 students already in the program for a total of 44 RN to BSN students. The Perkins Grant provided funding to hire Practice Lab Manager, John Bain, MSN, CCRN, who has spent considerable time developing space and electronic infrastructure for new high fidelity simulators. These will be critical to providing high quality clinical learning experiences for nursing and EMS students in the coming year. Building and Grounds Department was able to complete much needed remodeling in the Practice Lab to enable full use of the simulation area. The Lab Manager and simulator manufacturer will be providing extensive simulation training to all department faculty during the fall semester. The Perkins Grant funding, along with some additional GBC funding, will continue to support the Practice Lab position for another year. We have been fortunate to hire three adjunct nursing instructors for fall semester. Tanya Hall, MSN, RN is nurse manager of the cardiac lab at NNRH She will be working with NURS 135 students for four clinical days and teaching NURS 336, Pathophysiology. She has worked as a preceptor for nursing students in Indianapolis prior to her move to NNRH last spring. Jennifer Mahlberg-Grant will also be helping out in NURS 135. She is a graduate of our ADN and RN to BSN programs and is beginning her DNP program at Southern Alabama University this fall. Jessica Borkman graduated from our RN to BSN program and will be helping out in NURS 257 this fall. Nursing faculty are spending a great deal of time and effort working on curriculum revision for both the ADN and RN to BSN programs, as well as implementation of the Systematic Plan for Evaluation for both nursing programs. This intensive work will continue throughout the 2012-2013 academic year. Human Services 1. The Human Services Program accreditation site visit has been postponed at the request of the two site visitors due to their personal reasons. A new date has not yet been established. At this time, they have agreed to consider March or April in the Spring of 2013. 2. Total enrollment in human services fall courses is currently: 136 3. There are two students participating in the HMS 106 Practicum course. They are both in Elko this semester. One student plans to complete their practicum studies at the Family Resource Center and the other, with Juvenile Probation. 4. Wendy Charlebois is teaching HMS 106 the Human Service Practicum, and the HMS 101, Introduction to Human Services course online. 5. Heather Steele will be interviewing graduates from the Human Services Program for the promotional film for the Tech Prep Program. Four human services graduates will be interviewed. One is working in Communities in Schools in the Fellows mentoring program, one is working for the home health call and scheduling center, one is working at the Family Resource Center and one is working in human services in Winnemucca. 6. One student who has graduated from GBC with an AAS Degree in Human Services is now attending the UNLV Human Services program. A second student is actively pursuing this course of study. Work will continue this year to negotiate a letter of agreement between UNLV and GBC for a more seamless pathway for students to obtain advance degrees in the counseling fields. 7. Mary Ray has received permission to attend the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) national meeting in Milwaukee, October 17-20, 2012. This is the program accreditation body. CNA Program Report 1. We had 2 summer classes 1 in Elko and 1 in Winnemucca 2. We currently have 5 CNA classes scheduled for Fall 2012 semester; 1 each in Elko, Battle Mountain, and Winnemucca; 2 in Pahrump. 3. We will also have 1 Christmas break in Elko and possibly 1 in Winnemucca. 4. We have a new CNA Instructor, Jama Ward, who is teaching a class for us in Pahrump starting in October. Jama currently lives in Las Vegas, but she is from Elko and a graduate of our RN-BSN Program. 5. We have changed our CNA testing schedule from monthly testing to only 5-6 times yearly. We discovered that each month, over half of the students we test are from either the Reno or Las Vegas areas. We have limited sign- up for testing to GBC students only, until just one week before testing. This has minimized the number of non-GBC students that we are testing. We have also communicated this information with the State Board and they are supportive of our decision to give priority to our own students and they are working on providing more testing availability in the Vegas area. 6. We continue to need more CNA instructors here in Elko and also in Ely, if anyone has names of potential instructors that are interested please have them contact Delene Volkert, 753-2216.
