Determination of Chair-of-Chairs Danny Gonzales volunteered to be the chair-of-chairs for the 2013 academic year with the caveat that he is elected as the social sciences department chair. In the event Dr. Gonzales is unable to serve as chair-of-chairs then Patty Fox will assume the responsibility. INT 100 Advisor Discussions A handout with the following statement was read and discussed. Add a requirement for mandatory advising from teaching faculty for degree seeking students that have declared a program/major. Currently they can get advising from anybody (ie. Berg Hall advisers, campus centers, etc.). Justification: 1) Students have indicated that they need more/better advising. 2) Program reviews have indicated that students need more/better advising. 3) We would like to increase student retention and degree completion - faculty advising should improve this. Requirement for the INT 100 students: Students will have two weeks after INT 100 to complete their advising (confirmed with Cindy Hyslop as sufficient time). Students must get the advising from the person who is their official adviser. Jan King says that the adviser/advisee list has errors, but that it should be able to tolerate this and this will allow incoming students (INT 100) to get contact with teaching faculty. Students that have no declared major/program may still get advising from the Berg Hall advisers, etc. If they do not like their official adviser, their official adviser is a never around, or they change programs/majors, they must change their adviser in PeopleSoft (requires a trip to Berg Hall or other administration nexus) and then they can get advisement as in step b above. Concerns over the proposed statement were: Administration needs to pinpoint advisement issues within disciplines. The information could then be used to improve the advisement in particular areas. Advisement is already included in the faculty evaluation system and the workload policy. The advisement process needs to be applied consistently throughout all departments. Center directors provide valuable advising for students enrolled at their locations. More discussion is needed on the topic. A sub-committee will be formed for next year to discuss the mandatory advisement requirement. Faculty Senate Container/Committees The container reorganization failed to pass Faculty Senate. The sub-committee took into consideration the remarks and concerns of senate members. Modifications to the container restructure were made, they were: Non-teaching faculty appointed to departments were placed back into their academic departments. A container was added for the Library. Non-teaching faculty supporting the centers were categorized into one container. Technology non-teaching faculty were grouped as a container. Chairs voted to approve the revised container structure with one vote per container unless a container has more than 10 members, and then they will receive two votes. No container will have more than two votes. It was agreed upon that if the proposed container structure fails then the one vote per container will be presented as an alternative solution. Course Assessment Report Chairs were asked to remind faculty that they need to complete one course assessment for this year. Curriculum and Articulation New INT course topics syllabi need to be approved by the curriculum and articulation committee to ensure all general education requirements are met. Ad Hoc General Education GBC will be sending a group of five to the Association of American Colleges and Universities Institute of General Education. Group members are Mary Doucette, Stephen Theriault, Christine Young-Gerber, Lynne Owens, and Mike McFarlane. Prioritization of History Faculty Vacancy The social sciences department received approval to replace and recruit for a history instructor position.
