These are hobby-type, personal development courses that are graded on a pass/withdraw basis and do not count toward a degree. The duration of the classes is often only a few hours. It was recommended by the committee that instructors teaching community education courses be exempt from the process. In lieu of the formal evaluation, each community education instructor will instead be evaluated by using the GBC continuing education and community service course evaluation form. The information from the completed course evaluations will provide beneficial information for the department and the instructors. Adjunct faculty teaching continuing education courses for academic credit will still be evaluated using the formal method of observation and evaluation. The recommendation will be shared with department chairs. Adjunct Faculty Handbook The committee will update the current handbook for adjunct faculty. The current handbook has grown in size and some of the information is out of date. The committee will look at creating a shortened version by adding links to information rather than including actual documents. Support staff and center directors input will be obtained. Communication with Adjunct Faculty The committee would like to update the website to reflect current information and use the site as a communication tool for adjuncts. Much information can be shared and adjuncts would have access to valuable tools to help them succeed at GBC. Email notifications, posters, and postcards are effective resources to help communicate with adjunct instructors. A concern in the amount of time it takes adjuncts to receive usernames and passwords was discussed; however, Human Resources and Computer Services are working on the issue and hope to have all the kinks worked out by the fall 2012 semester.
