ࡱ> 02/ bjbjVV 4 << C0 s6@ą"0CKKKCK : ICE Committee Minutes / Report 12/6/11 Members present: Karen Dannehl, Christine Young-Gerber, Angie de Braga, Karen Kimber, Gail Rappa, Jeannie Rosenthal Members absent: Wendy Charlebois, Michelle Smith, Mardell Wilkins Guests: Ami Rogers, Lora Minter We have spent little money from the budget. $48 was used for printing costs for publicity for Argentum. We have $8534 in cash right now, which includes a gift from the Foundation in years past. Mike McFarlane has given us $6K from his budget, which will be used to fund Argentum (which cost $7K last year). We have a $1478 grant for the Film Festival, and $2K from Tour West for Joni Morris for her concert on 4/19/12. Were paying Joni $5K. As part of the Nevada Humanities Cowboy Poetry Speakers, weve committed $1500 for Tom Sheridan, but Barry Corbin will be free. In all, we have $19,512 total. $3K has been set aside as expenses for the Film Festival. Our surplus is $2500 right now, not counting any revenue from Joni Morris or the Film Festival. Susanne Bentley is interested in Shaun Griffen or Gailmarie Pahmeier, both of whom are on the Tumblewords roster, to speak to her poetry class next semester. The committee voted to ask Susanne to choose which speaker she would prefer to speak to her class. Jeannie will work with her to secure grant funding. There was a discussion of how to program the TVs in the Center for Student Life to show our upcoming programming loop. Harry Madsen, a professional stuntman, has offered to read from A Cowboy Named Emmet and take questions about his profession. He will be at the Theater on Tuesday, 1/31/12 at 1:00 as backup for the Cowboy Poetry Speakers. The new photo exhibit will go up that day. Deon Reynolds will be there to talk about his work at 4, and a reception will follow from 5 to 7. Thomas Sheridan will speak on Native Peoples of the Southwest on Thursday, 2/2/12, from 4 to 5:15 in Laurie Walshs class. We will contact the California Trail Center, local Native contacts, Norm Cavanaugh, Jan Peters, the Native American Club and Charlie Ekberg (photographer) for outreach. The committee voted to fund 700 copies of an insert to be included in an upcoming Chamber of Commerce newsletter 1 side for the Cowboy Poetry speakers, 1 side for the Film Festival. The student art show is up. This semester, it is a mentor/mentee theme, with student work being shown next to work by the teaching faculty. Gail would like to continue this theme for one show per year, so that faculty work will be shown next to work by students. Gail has requested money from Mike to purchase panels to hang work on, which will allow for pinning up mats. This way, all work wont have to be framed, which can be quite expensive. The reception for the show is this Thursday, 12/8/11, from 5 to 7. Mike has approved using his host account for receptions. Gail suggested selling Elko Film Festival passes at the reception. We will try to have tickets and schedules ready by then. Lora Minter, who has agreed to chair the Argentum subcommittee, would like to meet with any interested subcommittee members next week, before the Christmas break. Submissions for Argentum will be accepted from students, faculty, staff and the community who are 18 years old and over. The submission may not be previously published. The Film Festival was discussed. The schedule of films has been set. Festival passes (4 films) will be $20 through December 24th. After that date, passes will be $25. Individual films are $7 general admission, $5 students and seniors. Ami Rogers discussed the Ruby Mountain Film Festival. They are in the process of rebuilding the board after the deaths of the Festivals co-founders. They would like to collaborate with GBC and ICE. Next year, the Festival will be on 9/27 through 9/30. They will help promote the GBC Film Festival at their Festival. Empowerment Week was discussed. This year, we would like to have a more positive, happy, uplifting theme. One Person CAN Make a Difference will be explored as a possibility. Gail Rappa suggested the man behind Every Monday Matters as speaker. He has been here in Elko, and she heard him at Sherman Station. He was quite good and well-received. Karen D. will research more. Jeannie discussed upcoming grant deadlines. Southern Exposure, which funds the performing arts of Latin America, sounds like a good match. Well get suggestions for performers to Jeannie by 12/15. The Nevada Arts Council has arts in education deadlines coming up soon. These will fund artists-in-residence, up to $7500, with a 1-to-1 match. The money will be available 7/1/12. We need to think about Tour West Grants, too we can receive up to 2 per year. The National Endowment for the Humanities has a 2 year college challenge grant. They will grant up to $300K for an endowment, and require a 2-to-1 match. Jeannie will e-mail us the wish list we created earlier for the Foundation, and well get back to her with more ideas.
