A total of 35 people attended both programs. Several stayed after the evening presentation to talk with the returnees, including several people nearing retirement who were quite interested in the possibility of volunteering with the Peace Corps. The returnees are interested in helping out with an existing or new annual service project in conjunction with ICE and GBC. Angie suggested they could perhaps help us with the Empowerment Week supply drive, which weve held in the past. Mike will take the suggestion back to the returnees. Susanne Bentley will be teaching Introduction to Poetry spring semester. She approached ICE to see about bringing in a poet through the Tumblewords grant program. She is interested in Shaun Griffen (preferred) or Gailmarie Pahmeier, both of whom are on the Tumblewords roster. Justin Evans, who has approached ICE about conducting a poetry reading and writing workshop, is not on the roster and will require additional work by the committee to qualify for this grant program. Susanne offered to help with the Cowboy Poetry Humanities Speakers, who will be in Elko from 1/30 to 2/3. Shes teaching an American Literature class in the spring, as well, and these speakers may be of interest to those students. Christine will let Angie know of good dates for Barry Corbin to appear in her class. Argentum was discussed. Nancy McClelland, writer and writing instructor as well as a part-time Tuscarora resident, has agreed to be a reader for Argentum. Gail spoke to a staffer for the Nevada Arts Council, who suggested that Argentum be opened to the community at large, instead of only to GBC students and faculty. A discussion was held about how to pay for the publication this year. Similar publications are published by subscription, we could have it online with a limited number of print copies, have a print-on-demand option, or even have it on cd. If we do publish online, then we could open it up to the performing arts, too theater students could read written submissions or perform plays, dance could be submitted, too. Gail will facilitate this years Argentum, but she requires a strong committee to help. Lynne Owens has volunteered to help. So far, $7430 has been budgeted for this years publication. Most of the cost of printing is in the setup. There is very little cost difference between having 500 printed versus 1000. If we do include the community in Argentum, should we have a certain percentage set aside for GBC submissions? Partnering with the Western Folklife Center will also be explored. They dont have a publication as far as we know, and this feels like a good fit for something we could do together. Angie will check with Mike McFarlane about opening this to the community. Gail will talk to Susannah about a web page for submissions. We discussed the possibility of a student intern to help with Argentum. Well talk to Tom Reagan about this, as the head of secondary education perhaps a good possibility for future high school English/journalism teachers. We will make more use of the flat screen televisions through the student center to help publicize upcoming events art, theater, etc. The Student Art Show goes up on 11/21, and the opening reception will be 11/30. It will be a mentor/mentee show, with work from faculty and students. Gail would like to have Argentum applications there, to encourage students to submit their work for the publication. The current show in the student center gallery will close on 11/17, with a reception at 3 pm in the Social Room. After checking with the Foundation, we will ask for a bouquet donation for the reception. The opening reception and talk by Deon Reynolds will be on 1/31. His work features landscapes and is taken with throwaway cameras. Gail meets will Lynn Mahlberg, Mike McFarlane, Adrian Mendez and Mark Fraga about the display cases in the student center. Buildings & Grounds would prefer that they be left in place, since they dont want to be responsible for moving them around. Angie will go, too, to lend ICE support. Vince Juaristi will be in Elko for Christmas, and would like to do a book signing, with the proceeds to benefit rural Nevada high school graduates. Unfortunately, he has suggested doing it here on campus on 12/22. The committee felt that this date will not bring out many attendees. We will suggest that he will have much better luck doing this downtown, perhaps at Duncan Littlecreek. Jane Goodall was suggested as a possible speaker. We will put her on our wish list of possibilities, when we have more funding. Mardell spoke to John, our system attorney, about insurance for ICE events. We will deal with Sue Dunt at UNR. We will approach this on an individual basis, but the general rule is that artists should supply us with proof of $250,000 in coverage. ICE can also purchase this insurance for approximately $300 per show, which we could then charge back to the performer. The Film Festival Committee has met and chosen the films for the next festival. Theyre currently investigating availability. We will show trailers on the flat screen televisions and on the web site. The dates are 2/10-11 and 3/2-3. Dinner and a movie will be 2/10. Christine reminded us that The Good Doctor will be 11/17-19, with shows at 7:30 and a matinee at 2:30. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, 12/6, at 10, in the Library Conference Room.
