Distance Education Memebers: Susanne Bentley, Bob Byram, Jim Elithorp, Lisa Frazier, Robert Hannu, Thomas Matula, Russ Orr, Stephen Theriault, John Newman The following responses were from Distance Education committee members regarding the selection of a course management system for the 2012-2013 academic year. Responses were collected from a discussion blog, LMS for GBC, and through email contact from committee members. BlackBoard/Moodle Rooms John Newman - Well they sure made it look easy to continue their services. It appears this would be a seamless transition. About the only thing I would need to see is a sample course in the 9.1 layout. That and what the cost would be. The presentation was a little rough on my end. I could not clearly hear all of what the young lady was demonstrating. I am a little afraid of the migration of materials on this platform. Is it because we are already with Blackboard and they have 'encrypted' the files? There appears to be a number of 'third party' extras that would have to be purchased with Moodle. Would the cost savings of the open source license justify this? What about the transition from version 1.0 to 2.0? Will this be a headache and are all the resources available? Again, I would like to play around in the Moodle platform to get a feel for it. Steve Theriault - BB9 does appear to be the easiest platform to migrate to, although cost is sure to be a concern. On a side note, the presnetation put on by BB seemed to be more professional and data driven than the "salesy" Moodle one. A few thoughts about Moodle based on my limited experience - I have been using Moodle since late June after WNC adopted the platform. I have had two all-day 8 hours training sessions in a group setting with the IT Director at WNC plus many email communications about using the platform, viewed many tutorials, and whenever I am at the Carson City campus, I make it a point to meet with IT to ask for additional guidance. It is not an intuitive program. There are bugs in the functionality that make it cumbersome to work within and there are just some nuances that I suppose I would eventually get use to (I hope!). For example, one nuance that affects me personally is in the discussion forum. Grading discussion participation in Moodle is considerably more time consuming and discussion is an important component in my courses,. In WebCampus, I can go to a particular DQ and open the grading option from the drop down menu, see what each student has posted, actually review by individual student a thread of all their posts, grade their activity and then send them an email, all from the same page. In Moodle, each of these steps requires you to open additional windows and the road back to the grading page breaks. For instance, you have to request posts for a specific student. Then you have to open each post separately in a new window, and then you have to post the grade in the gradebook (another window), and then send the student an email regarding their participation. Going to the gradebook and emailing students takes you out of the area where you were viewing their posts. So then you have to go back in through reports, and start the process all over again for the next student. The technical term is it is a pain in the butt and I can see where it leads to instructor confusion with a distinct possibility of something getting missed. I list the above as just one example, there are many more that I am finding as I work through this semester. If this sounds confusing, I apologize. I actually tried to make this example as simple as possible. Some bugs and issues will not affect all instructors but others are so different from our current platform that it is more time consuming to accomplish the same tasks. I have been trying to resolve an issue for approximately two weeks of the five weeks this course has been active to make grading discussion a bit easier. I just received word Friday that my particular issue is a pending fix, to be accomplished at the end of the year. My issue is not the nuance I describe above but rather a break in functionality that although they say it works, doesnt. Not going to help me much during the 11 weeks left this semester that I will have to work around the problem. One last comment in this early thread, if I may - in the demo, there were inconsistencies that were demonstrated that do not work in Moodle 2.0. For example, the calendar function does not automatically place your exams, quizzes, assignments, etc on the calendar as we were told in the demo. The instructor not only has to physically place each one, but also list open and closing dates so the students can use the calendar as a viable tool. Maybe I am spoiled, I confess that I am very comfortable with CE8 (our current WebCampus), warts and all. But I am not seeing the Moodle option (other than cost that I am told is significantly cheaper than CE9) as a strong consideration at this time, based on limited experience. As I noted in my brief comments last Friday, I am underwhelmed by the Moodle platform through today and my students are not impressed either. Russ Orr - I have to agree with the other comments. Web Campus has worked well, and the proposed changes with an upgrade from 8 to 9.1 should answer most of my noted shortcomings. I didn't see any significant advantage with a switch to Joule, but I did note some serious concerns. Jim Elithorp It is my professional opinion that Blackboard Learn edged MoodleRooms by a wide margin for the following reasons: 1. There are significant doubts about the migration of MoodleRooms. The fact that Blackboard CE 8 is encrypted causing MoodleRooms to consider contracting for manual migration is an undesirable indicator. We will have a near revolution at GBC if the existing courses do not migrate. While one can argue that Blackboard Learn has an unfair advantage--facts are facts--Migration is a huge faculty issue. 2. Blackboard Learn will provide a quantitative link from course outcomes to the assessment documents--providing resources to do the work proposed by our GBC Evaluations and Assessment Committee. MoodleRooms cannot provide this linkage. 3. Blackboard Learn is a known quantity. Many of the issues that faculty have with CE 8 have been addressed. The software will be familiar lessening the learning curve for the faculty. 4. Blackboard Learn came to sell their product. They gave a good presentation. In other words, they invested in us. I got the impression that they wish to keep us as a client. The MoodleRooms presentation was in contrast inferior. Thomas Matula I agree. Also the learning curve for students will be less for Blackboard as well. Over the last 14 years I have been teaching online I have seen just about every type of LMS and Blackboard has always been the best organized and easiest to use. At the moment they are the one to beat and they have set a high standard. Desire 2 Learn/ Canvas John Newman This (Desire 2 Learn) definitely had a little more going for it than did Moodle Rooms. However, I found the interface to be somewhat less intuitive than Blackboard. I still need to play around a little more. Interesting to see all the 'add-ons' that came with this LMS. There are some very neat features that Canvas has. In my humble opinion I found this to # in ease next to Blackboard. Probably since I am so used to the Bb interface is the only reason. With a little time this could be just as easily managed. Canvas seemed like they had no problem with migrating content to there LMS. The other two systems (Desire 2 Learn, MoodleRooms) seemed like it had to have some sort of secret encryption and the oracle himself involved in the migration. It appears as if the deciding factor here is going to be the costs. Well I have started the migration process for one of my courses from our WebCampus to Canvas. This was pretty straight forward. I did not need any help and just followed the prompts. We'll see what the course looks like when it has finished migrating. Start was 3:30 pm on 10/11/11. WOW! The migration of the course was completed at 3:35. Only five minutes to go from WebCampus to Canvas. There was one error reported but I can not seem to find it. Susanne Bentley I am going to try a course migration this weekend. There is a lot that I like about Canvas, but I have a concern about the open source nature of the platform, though. I love the video conferencing tool with students and the syllabus creation tool. Lisa Frazier I was really impressed by both of the presentations today. I'm really worried about the add on pricing D2L kept adding on like the $5-$30 ANNUALLY! to integrate to PeopleSoft in addition to fees to add in things like Wimba, TurnItIn and other 3rd party things we use or may want to use in the future. D2L was really impressive! Canvas had some really innovative tools. I really need to look at some of my questions like the grading features in Canvas to see if it will meet our needs. I've put in for a bid from TurnItIn so we have an idea of what the license will cost us if we choose anyone but Blackboard. I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks now that we have looked at all four vendors and after they have had a chance to go into the playground areas! Linda Uhlenkott Lisa Frazier and I had a phone conference with the Blackboard reps on Wed. morning. Then, Cathy Fulkerson, Lisa and I had a web meeting with the Canvas rep on Wed. afternoon. We wanted to know about the availability and ease-of-use of any assessment tools that each LMS has. The Blackboard rep wanted to show us a completely new method of assessment, and their focus is on the program level. I told her that what we/I was looking for was that individual faculty could use some already-builtin tool to make assessment at the course level practical and easy We ended the conference at that point because the representative said that she'd have to consult with someone else to see what could be done. My impression is that it won't be easy, and if it can be done, it will probably be an add-on that costs more. Canvas, on the other hand, took us through the assessment feature and showed us how it would work by course and by individual student. Very easy and almost intuitive -- Canvas had an additional feature that completely sold me. I mentioned that the SpeedGrader wouldn't be as helpful to me because I comment on papers within the paper. The rep told me that I could download all the papers from a class in a .zip file, make comments and save papers with the same filename that they came to me with, something that we can't do now. Then I could put them back into a .zip file, upload them to the course, and they would be automatically distributed to the same student. This would make teaching online much less labor intensive. We could teach more and work less on the technical stuff. Further discussion about all four LMSs will take place on Thursday October 20, 2011 during an IAV conference with Distance Education members. Both written and verbal reports will be delivered to the October 21, 2011 meeting of faculty senate.
