Approval of minutes: Action A motion was made and seconded to approve Faculty Senate Minutes from the September 24, 2010 meeting. There were 11 proxies recorded. The motion passed unanimously. senate chair report: Information Chair Negrete talked about the Chancellors 60/120 plan. He was agreeable to senate chairs drafting a revised version of either or both policies. Senate chairs will try to clarify in the new draft issues that were discussed in the meeting: AAS degrees and their exclusion from the policies, a phase in period for the 60 and 120 credit limits, how low yield would be considered across institutions, when faculty are also supporting other programs, etc. Jim Ellithorp asked if this would define a program, clarifying that if certain emphasis areas within a degree were not producing 10 graduates per year but others were, if that emphasis would be considered low-yield by itself. Lynette and Laurie Walsh are in the process of redoing the forms. The committee is also working on a procedural manual. TMCC has asked if members of the committee would be able to travel to their institution and show them what they are developing. A college in California has also asked the committee to visit. Written Report Library No Report Personnel Written/Verbal Report David Freistroffer reminded the Senate that the sabbatical applications are due, in his office, on October 28th. David would like the applications submitted on paper and not email. Professional Enrichment Ad Hoc Committee Written/Verbal Report - Lynette Macfarlan thanked Lisa Frazier and Ed Nickel for their presentations today. Lisa Frazier talked about the presentations for next month: Kevin Laxalt and Frank Daniels will be doing the presentations. Lisa and Lynette asked that you email Frank if you plan to attend his presentation. He needs at least 12 participants, and his presentation is live only. Frank is going to look at teamwork and team building. Lisa talked about the survey that was filled out last spring, and team work was one of the items that ranked high on the survey. Brown bag luncheons, for viewing Dr. Allitts DVDs are Oct. 22, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10. The time is 11-12:45, and a roundtable session will be held afterwards. These will be held in the Foundation boardroom, in McMullen Hall. Lisa reminded the Senate that you can watch the DVDs through WebCampus. Contact Lisa Frazier to be able to do this. NEW BUSINESS Cindy Hyslop Revamping the voting containers (5 min) Cindy is bringing this to the Senate to get a sense of what the Senate would like. Some statistics given about our current Senate: 125 Senate members, 60 votes, 37 faculty, 23 admin. faculty. GBC has one of the largest Senates. Cindy talked about how some other senates work and how they are broken out between teaching faculty and administrative faculty. Discussion was held about why this was needed. Chair Negrete asked for a sense of the senate: Yes was the majority vote, 7 abstained. INFORMATION Announce Kris Miller as Dean of Health Sciences. Mark Fraga as Facilities Officer. Chair Negrete announced that Kris Miller has been hired as the Dean of Health Sciences and she will begin work in January. Mark Fraga was introduced by Sonja Sibert as the new Facilities Officer. Chair Negrete made the following announcements from Presidents Council; There are no nominees for outstanding faculty, advisor or Regent Scholar award. Cindy Hyslop reminded the members that everyone should have some outstanding student that could be nominated. Karen Martin mentioned that it is a lot of work to put an application together and that discourages people from nominating. United Way is looking for board members. If you are interested, email Chair Negrete and she will forward that information to the proper people. Chair Negrete stated that the United Way is in no way partnering with Ĵý in any fundraising efforts, this is just a request for board members. School colors: This has become an important issue on campus. Current colors are sage green and metallic gold. Students have voted and they voted for forest green and gold. Chair Negrete mentioned that consistency is important and it is expensive to make the change. Discussion was held about the history of the colors. There will not be any action taken on this item until at least December.
