A copy was given to everyone present at the meeting and is attached to the meeting minutes for review. Human Services lab fees have been going into the nursing account. Need to make sure that a Human Service account is set up to collect the fees into that account. Foundation office will be paying the Heath Science Human Service account back for the nursing uniforms that were purchased. Mary and Cheries requests for professional development funds from compensation and benefits committee were approved. They will be traveling to Las Vegas for the ACERT conference. Program Updates: Have well over 40 facilities and agencies that support various health sciences and human services programs. Range from hospitals, extended care facilities, community and social service agencies throughout our service area and to facilities and agencies outside our service area. Radiology Medical Imaging (Mary/Cherie) Very successful program which is filling critical radiology staffing needs throughout rural and Northern Nevada. Began in 2006 and since 2008, have graduated 35 students. Employment rate has been 85% or better within first 6 months of graduation. There are 24 students in the program - 10 second year and 14 first year. The JRCERT accreditation visit was completed October 6-7th some of the recommendations for the program included. Policy statement (mission statements) Suggested that in the student evaluations there needs to be a section where the student can address and evaluation student resources within the college (testing center, library, student success center, etc.). One of the real positive evaluations from the JRCERT evaluators was that all the standards under student criteria within the program were successfully met. The next process the program will go through is that the evaluators from JRCERT will submit a report in 30 days, and then a report will be sent from JRCERT in 60 days to the radiology program. The radiology program will have 60 days to reply to any of the non-met standards with an action plan. The accreditation will release their finding in May 2011. The accreditation process has taken approximately two years to prepare for and have the site visit. Mary and Cherie felt that the site visit went very well. Human Services (Mary Ray) Designed to prepare students for employment in a variety of settings, which include social service agencies, mental health centers, correctional institutions, substance abuse treatment facilities, community health education organizations. Program also includes a substance abuse counselor training certificate component. There are 117 Human Service Majors that are new students. This program continues to grow every year. There are currently two adjunct faculty working in the program with Mary Ray as the program director. There are currently 31 students taking Intro to Human Services and the total enrollment for the program is at 125 students. The accreditation committee from the National Organization of Human Services will be coming for a site visit in the Spring with two site visitors. The self-study is scheduled to be submitted in November. Mary took the National Human Service Practitioner exam for norming purposes, and was grand-parented in as a member of the first group of nationally board certified Human Service Practitioners. Mary is continuing to work with Dr. Larry Ashley from Human Services Program at UNLV to establish a letter of agreement so that students can more seamlessly complete Bachelors and Masters degrees in Human Services and Counseling through UNLV. The CPD 116, Substance Abuse Facts and Fundamentals course has been approved by the VPAA and the Department Chairs for transfer from the Social Science Department to the Health Science and Human Service Department. This has been a core Human Service program course for the past four years. We have a new student representative for human services: Kat Shearer-Pejic. She began attending the human services review committee meetings, and has agreed to participate in the departmental community advisory group meetings. She will also be attending the national human services conference with me at the end of the month CNA (Jo Dean) Since Spring 2007, almost 700 individuals have completed the 120 hour, Nevada State Board approved course There are 6 classes CNA classes running at this time 2 courses in Pahrump, 2 courses in Winnemucca, 1 course in Ely, and 1 course in Elko. The CNA program has 2 courses schedule to run during the Christmas break. The CNA program is also looking to teach more instructors to instruct the CNA courses. A Train the Trainer course for this purpose is schedule for 1 course in Pahrump and 1 course in Elko EMS (Karen Mowery) Offer basic and intermediate EMT courses. Also, offer first aid, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support courses, and first responder courses to public and to various agencies and businesses in our service area. IAV WebCampus EMT Basic class, which will be geared for distance education students will come to Elko every other Saturday to participate in a skills lab to have hands on practice and sign offs. Nursing Associate Degree Nursing Fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. There have been 299 graduates since 1979 when the program began. The Program receives anywhere from 38 to 50 applications for the program each year, and depending on faculty #s and clinical capacity, admit 16-24/year. This fall admitted 18. Post-graduate employment rates are very good, for example 86% of May 2010 graduates were employed as RNs within 3 months of graduation 6 were hired by NNRH 1 was hired by Battle Mountain Hospital 3 were hired by Humboldt General Hospital in Winnemucca 1 was hired by Lovelock General Hospital 2 were hired by Renown Regional Medical Center 1 was hired by Home Health of Nevada 1 was hired by Owyhee Clinic 1 was hired by Highland Manor, skilled nursing facility here in Elko National Council Licensing Examination pass rates for the past 5 years have been above the State Board of Nursings required standard of 80%. May 2010 graduates = 90.9% May 2009 graduates = 100% Seventeen students in the first year group are taking their NURS 135 course and Pharmacology course. The first year students are approaching their final clinical rotation at Highland Manor and are getting ready to start there hospital clinical at NNRH. All the students have all passed their drug dosage calculation test and are doing well. Twenty students are in the second year group and are currently taking NURS 257 and NURS 241. The second year students are halfway through clinical and all students have passed the drug dosage calculations test. The Pediatric Emergency Assessment Stabilization (PEARS) course is a new addition to the NURS 257 course and will be taught by Karen Mowery. The Associate Degree Program is looking at omitting the pre-requisites of nutrition and human development. It is thought that much of the content in these courses are already covered throughout the nursing curriculum. Within NSHE, no other AAS nursing program is still requiring these courses. Before consideration of omitting these courses it will be investigated how much content is being taught. Baccalaureate Nursing Program (RN-BSN) BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) provides additional professional development opportunities for RNs who are place-bound, living and working in rural Nevada who desire a bachelors degree in nursing. The BSN program has a total of 33 students in the program. The first 2 BSN courses taught in the 6 week sections were completed with all students passing both courses. The NURS 336 course that just started had some problems with the students not knowing that they had to purchase a 60 dollar access code that did not come with the book. The access code has its own ISBN number and will need to be included in the book orders for next Fall. Strategic Planning Updates no update at this time. Announcements Book orders for Spring semesters need to be submitted by October 22, 2010. Next Department Meeting November 5th. Time is still to be determined. The new Dean/Nursing Program Director Chris Miller will be in town.
