Approval of minutes: Action A motion was made and seconded to approve Faculty Senate Minutes from the August 17, 2010, meeting. There were 6 proxies recorded. The motion passed unanimously. senate chair report: Information Benefits Chair Negrete gave some clarification on how the benefits are being reduced. The benefits board was not asked to cut the 10%; they were asked to build a budget with the money that they had last year. The reductions come from 9% medical inflation. With no increase in funding and the mandatory federal health reform, that has about a 2 %. So, 11 % to 12% needs to be cut, to meet the budget from last year. This has not been enacted since it must be passed by the legislature first. There are many people working on this issue. Adjunct faculty voting reps Just a reminder that this needs to be done. Committee web pages All chairs have been asked that they, or a designated committee member, update their committee web page and to keep the page up to date. There are a lot of pages that have not been updated for the past several years. Security cameras - Cameras are being installed at the Controllers office, pointed toward the cash register, in the Leonard Center, in the pool table/game area, because there is a cash machine in that area, and another camera will be placed in the SGA offices. Pat Anderson clarified that the cameras are not being focused on faculty, but they are being placed in these areas for security and to prevent vandalism. The cameras have been requested by the different areas. Community College Committee kudos to the CTE program. During the Community College Committees visit, they were very impressed by this program. Bruce James, committee chair, mentioned that we should be providing enough financial aid to the students that are serious about coming to college. There was discussion about open door policies at community colleges, and whether or not there should be some criteria set. In the past, the fees for Nevada colleges were kept low to try and encourage more students to come to college. Now, it appears that this hasnt been the case for more enrollment. If fees are increased, the colleges will have to make sure there is enough access to the financial aid to help the students pay for their college. A lot of private funding was discussed. The committee was very complimentary of the foundation, which is starting a 13 million dollar campaign. Work force training was discussed. Another idea thrown out was that all 11th and 12th graders could be co-enrolled in a community college. Now is the time to make changes to education and the committee is looking at all kinds of solutions and ideas. Chair Negrete feels that our presentation went well and was accepted well. She feels more at ease with the committee, after hearing their comments. After the committee has visited all campuses, they will come up with some recommendations or suggestions for the Chancellor, later this spring. committee reports Academic Standards No Report Adjunct Faculty No Report Assessment Written/Verbal Report with Action Item Linda Uhlenkott gave the committees report and mentioned that part of what assessment is dealing with this year is Gen Ed. The Gen Ed grid is in place to provide a well-rounded education to students in all parts of the college. The action item is about general education. All information is not being brought before the Senate at once. Wording changes were recommended to the Assessment Committee last spring when the committee met with focus groups. Following are the changes. New language is bolded. Objective 2: Critical Thinking Integrate creativity creative and holistic thinking, logic, quantitative reasoning, and the hierarchy of inquiry and knowing in social and scientific understanding. There are three elements to thisobjective: Quantitative Ability Understand mathematical principles and integrate quantitative methods into problem solving. Reasoning and Independent Thought Use logic and visual thinking in selecting, analyzing, and presenting information. Scientific Understanding Understand the essential workings of natural systems, understand the hierarchy of scientific knowing and the use of the scientific method in its pursuit, and have the ability to use this knowledge predictively. Objective 4: Personal Wellness Personal Growth and Responsibility Develop knowledge, skills, and behaviors which promote personal well being. Objective 5: Technological Understanding Function effectively in modern society through the use of relevant technology. Demonstrate information literacy through the ability to locate, evaluate and effectively use information. Remove bulleted item under Objective 5 in the GBC Catalog. The item reads: Use basic computer technology competently in current applications. A question was asked about what creative and holistic thinking meant and why it was changed. It was changed to be more specific, and the committee felt it was a more important skill for students. Chair Negrete asked for a motion. A motion was made and seconded to approve the changes. There was one member opposed. Motion passed. Budget & Facilities Verbal Report The Budget & Facilities committee would like to get a sense of the Senate on classroom furnishings. Rich Barton talked about furnishings in the classrooms and having the same furniture throughout the classrooms. One concern, from an instructor, was that she prefers tables over desks because of the way she teaches and uses groups. She asked that the committee keep that in mind. Another instructors comment was that he has never heard a student complain about the furniture. The instructor feels that if it is a cost issue, that the money could be spent elsewhere. Chair Negrete agreed that the college would buy similar furniture so that if furniture needed to be swapped, between classrooms, it would all match. Another question was about ergonomics and that would be taken into consideration. The sense of the Senate agreed that this is a good idea. Department Chairs Written/Verbal Report Bonnie Hofland announced that Mike has agreed to hire 5 faculty- 3 tenure (theatre/music, business and English) and 2 temporary full-time (business and history). These positions will start the hiring process immediately for spring semester. Distance Education Written/Verbal Report The Distance Ed committee is looking at standardizing equipment for all IAV classrooms. The committee is working on this as the budget permits. One of the most requested items is the wireless power point clicker. Let John Newman know if a classroom you use does not have the wireless clicker; there are funds available to get them. Bob Hannu has been helping out with rotating out the old equipment. The second item, John talked about the Sloan Foundation Report on online learning. One item that was looked at was the growth for taking complete online courses. There is a 17% growth rate for enrollment of the classes online. GBC is experiencing 25 33% plus online growth. The Sloan Report indicates that19% of faculty who teach online courses do not receive any training. The highest amount of training was from informal peer mentoring or some sort of in-house institutional training. At GBC, we have many courses for training instructors, but they are not required. UNR has established a Course Makeover Program, which is an in-house peer review that they use with instructors who teach online courses. John Newman showed a portion of a UNR clip on the Course Makeover Program. Courses are submitted to colleagues to review and get feedback, which is non judgmental and non-competitive. The instructors can then pick and choose what ideas they believe would work best. There are other programs around the country, one called Quality Matters. John showed some examples of what a peer review might look for in an online course. He also showed an example rubric. The reason this was brought to the committee is so that GBC can set some guidelines for their online courses. The committee is looking at developing a program here at GBC (with the Enrichment Committee) for new instructors and to establish quality online courses. The committee would like to look forward to establishing Faculty Senate approval for some sort of baseline rubric or basic criteria that has to be met. This is being brought before the Senate to get some feedback and to think about possibly developing some criteria of a review program for online courses. A Senate member asked about clarification on the basic rubric guideline, since there are some guidelines already in place. Another member talked about contact hours for online courses versus live classroom. One other member talked about the mentoring piece and getting from or giving ideas to a peer mentor and being a better online teacher. Lisa Frazier talked about a UNR award winning course and that our GBC courses are better, but we havent submitted any information to receive awards. A member gave a students opinion, that consistency is important for the student. Another member asked if instructors would become certified in online instructing, with this program. Chair Negrete asked that you find out who the Distance Ed reps are, so that you can talk to the proper people about your ideas and letting your voice be heard. Faculty & Administrative Evaluations No Report Faculty/Staff Safety Written Report I.C.E. Verbal Report Jeanne Rosenthal announced some upcoming events. Joni Morris will be performing Oct. 14, at 6:30 PM, in the theater. In November, the committee will be bringing a one man act from New York. He will be doing some Edgar Allen Poe, and he is really fun. This show will be November 18, at 7:00 PM, in the theater. The committee will also be doing some workshops early in the day. Battle Mountain asked for a Joni Morris poster to put up on their campus. There was a really good turnout for the presentations. The first brown bag session to view Dr. Allitts DVDs has been scheduled for Friday, October 22nd, from 11:45 to 12:45. They do not have the location determined yet . The next two GBC presenters will be Lisa Frazier and Ed Nichol, on Oct. 15. Ed will be presenting Student Remote Access Computer Labs. Lisa will be presenting Digital Imaging with software that you have at home, and she will also be doing some basic imaging. This workshop is appropriate for all employees. Lynette showed what the committee is doing with all of their enrichment activities: you can access the presentations thru the web campus area. Lisa Frazier showed how to access the items that are available at this site. You must send Lisa Frazier an email in order to have access to the site. Lisa also talked about the discussion area that is on the site. Lynette mentioned that you can go in and view the videos and put them on your evaluation forms, even though you were not there in person.
