Guest: Justine Stout. 9/30/10 (Cancelled Meeting) Members Present: Julie Smith, Barbra Moss. Guest: Paulette Batayola. Thanks for attending, ladies and agreeing to support Bombast! Old Business: The Minutes of the 9/09/10 meeting were approved. Karen will send them to Gaye Terras. The Ruby Mountain Chamber Music Committee sent the ICE Committee a thank you note for helping promote and put on the Childrens concert at GBC. It was signed from Pat Warren, Nancy Remington, Mimi Ellis-Hogan, Vicki Rossolo, Ann Nisbet, Susan Hamilton, and Tom Walther. Guest, Justine Stout, asked the committee to sponsor a performance by the Reno band, Buster Blue on October 27 at Ĵý. Justine did a great job building enthusiasm for the band by playing a demo of their music. The committee decided that October 27th was not a good date, because ICE already has several things in the works this fall. Justine will find out if the band would be willing to perform in Elko in February and be agreeable to being paid from the sales of tickets. ICE would like to sponsor the event and provide use of the GBC theater and some help in promoting the concert. It was also suggested that Justine present information about the band to the SGA programming board to see if they were interested in helping to get young people to the event and possibly even offering financial support such as hotel rooms. Lynne Owens announced that the GBC Film Festival will run over two weekends this year February 4th and 5th and February 11th and 12th. The Film committee will meet with Boys and Girls Club director, Fernando Vargas to talk about possibly using some of the kids shorts that they produced. Jeannie asked if Carmen Matlock would be willing to take over the duties of ordering films and refreshments. Angie checked with Carmen, and Carmen agreed to do so. The Joni Morris concert promotion is underway. The controllers office has pre-sold 11 tickets. Wyoming put together an excellent electronic press release that went out October 2nd. He also sent it to GBC faculty and staff, and suggested that we offer the radio stations complimentary tickets to give away to their listeners to promote the show. Angie and Mardell will distribute the tickets and posters to all the Elko stations. Big Country 103.9 has agreed to interview Joni at 8 am on 10/14. Jeannie will write up a 30-second PSA to include with the tickets. Jeannie is also taking care of food and drinks for the band and hotel rooms. Mary Ray will work in the ticket office the night of the performance, and Lynn Owens, Mardell and other committee members attending will help usher and hand out evaluations. Nevada Humanities speaker, Michon Mackedon, former English Professor at Western Nevada College, has planned to visit Elko and Ely and is looking for help promoting her speaking tour on her book, Bombast Spinning Atoms in the Desert, which is about all things nuclear in Nevada, and how the atomic industry manipulates language to make the unsafe appear safe. Julie Smith and Paulette Batayola have pledged support from SGA for Bombast, and would like to work jointly with ICE to sponsor the event. Barbra Moss would like to host this author in her Creative Writing Class on Thursday, November 4th at 7 p.m. in EIT 208. Ms. Mackedon has agreed and will gift three of her books to each campus. The event will be open to all students, faculty, and public who are interested. Mary Swetich is working on finding a class or open room on the Ely campus for the presentation there. Mardell announced that Ĵý will host the Elko Chamber of Commerces Business After Hours on February 17th. As host, the college will get to advertise in the Chambers newsletter for the month of/prior to the event. We will also get to post our events on their electronic billboard on Idaho Street. We think this will be very advantageous for promoting the Film Festival and other upcoming spring ICE and college events. We hope to insert film festival flyers into their newsletter. Jeannie announced that Joshua Kane has signed his contract and he has received the first payment. She handed out copies of the contracts for Joni Morris and Joshua, so we could see what was required for each performance. We are in need of many props for Joshuas performance. Will the committee please start searching for the following items? One dull brass or dark wooden (old-fashioned) coat rack A large round silver tray (Mardell may have.) Two glass tumblers and a glass wine decanter (1880s period if possible) One tall stool wooden, painted flat black and sturdy (unpadded) Strong black concert music stand All committee members are encouraged to go see Joni Morris if possible! Our next meeting is October 21 at 10 a.m. Karen will check to see if the library conference room is available.
