The following members were present: C. Bruno, N. Cavanaugh, L. Costa-Campbell, M. Doucette, X. Du, D. Ellefsen, P. Fox, B. Hannu, B. Hofland, T. Matula, R. McNally, C. McMullen, A. DeBraga, C. Mitchel, K. Mowery, B. Murphy, E. Nickel, M. Swetich, G. Tenney, B. Wallace, N. Whittaker. Guests: M. McFarlane The following items of concern to Faculty Senate were discussed: 1 The report to Faculty Senate for the April meeting was approved as written. 2 Setting Priorities for Hiring: VPAA McFarlane announced that 3-5 positions would be backfilled beyond the four that are already under contract; those four will be continued. He asked the Department Chairs to determine which positions would be given priority. After discussion, the committee agreed on the following priority order: Business Theatre/Music History Business Nursing These positions will be filled with temporary, 1-year hires. Mike will make the final decisions as to how many of these positions can actually be filled. On a related matter, Mike asked the committee for the go-ahead in hiring to fill Diane Elmores position which she is vacating to take a position at Salt Lake Community College. The committee agreed to allow that position filled immediately, so that the number of nursing students admitted to the program would not have to be further reduced. (Admissions are due to begin soon, and the Health Sciences Department must have its staffing set up in order to know how many students to admit.) Chairs also gave Mike and the department permission to hire this position as tenure-track . A question was asked about the five administrative faculty jobs which would be RIFed. Mike confirmed that this is true, and that the positions are spread out among college functions so that no area will bear the brunt of the staff reductions. He also explained that the positions will stand for the coming year due to hiring policy which requires a years notice. 3 Proposed Evaluation Form for Department Chairs: A second draft of this form was brought to the committee for discussion and approval by Bonnie Hofland, Cyd McMullen, and Ed Nickel who have been working with the Faculty Evaluation Committee to replace the form currently in use in the Faculty Evaluation System. A number of members of the Dept. Chairs Committee voiced objections to the addition of asterisks for required items on the evaluation. Ed Nickel and others believe that a department chair could receive a negative evaluation if only ONE point was missed in a required area, giving the items with asterisks too much weight in the evaluation. Mike McFarlane responded that there are some MINIMUM requirements that a chair must perform in order to get a positive evaluation. Bonnie Hofland reported that Lynette Macfarlan, co-chair of the Evaluation Committee, said that the committee would not approve the new form without asterisks. A vote was taken to approve the 2nd draft of the form as presented. The vote was 12 for, 6 against, and three abstentions. The 2nd draft will go to the Evaluation Committee for approval and eventually to Senate. 3 - INT 100: Cyd McMullen asked that each department report to her by email who will represent the department at the summer orientations on 6/12 and 8/6. Each department should attempt to have at least one representative to attend the faculty advising portion in the afternoon. Cyd has confirmed those faculty who will be making the one-hour academic presentation in the early afternoon. 4 Required Orientation for New Adjuncts: Patty Fox brought an idea before the committee that an orientation for new adjunct faculty should be mandatory in order to acquaint them with GBC policies and procedures. Mike McFarlane commented that the face-to-face orientation of adjunct faculty held at the beginning of each year proved to be ineffective since most new adjuncts did not attend. A suggestion was made that the orientation should be online. Other committee members stated that they thought that there were evaluation materials for adjuncts either online or in print. Former Education faculty member Dorothy Moore compiled a manual for adjuncts which some thought might be available already on the website. Others commented that it has been difficulty to contact adjuncts who dont visit their mail boxes or who arent using their GBC emails. Another suggestion was made that the Faculty Senate Committee on Adjuncts should be invited to give their input. Cyd McMullen suggested that this issue be put on the agenda for the Fall 2010 semester, since this is the final meeting of the current term. Richard McNally, incoming Chair of Chairs, agreed to carry it forward. 5 Finals Being Given Early: Carrie Bruno said that students have been telling her that only the Science Department is giving final exams during the designated week. Mike McFarlane explained that a semester consists of 15 content weeks and one week of final exams. To give finals during the 15th week rather than the 16th cuts out allocated to covering content. He has sent out one email making this point and isnt aware of specific faculty members who are giving test early. If there are faculty who are not complying, Mike should be told. 6 Cyd McMullen thanked the Chairs Committee for their cooperation and good work over the two years she has served as Chair of Chairs. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:15 AM.
