The following members were present: C. Bruno, A. DeBraga , A. Donnelli (representing K. Mowery), X. Du, D. Ellefsen, P. Fox, D. Freistroffer, B. Hannu, R. McNally, C. McMullen, C. Mitchel, E. Nickel, M. Swetich, G. Tenney, B. Wallace, N. Whittaker. Guests: M. McFarlane, J. King. The following items of concern to Faculty Senate were discussed: 1 The Report to Senate for the March 12 meeting was approved with changes: the date should read April 7; on page 2 under Faculty Safety Committee, the proposal was sent to the Senate Bylaws Committee, which will forward it to Senate. 2 Discussion of Budget Cut Issues for Departments: Mike McFarlane was present to answer questions from Chairs about the effects of the budget cuts. In response to questions, Mike told us to proceed as usual in most instances. Any changes to the Long-Term Schedule should wait until fall, although there may be a need on a case-by-case basis to make changes; Mike will be open to that if it is made clear that other options are available to students. Class caps may be lower at department discretion until buyouts are finally determined and staffing needs are clear. Mike would like to have a meeting in mid-May to determine which positions might be filled with temporary hires and which can be carried by adjuncts. Department Chairs is the place for such discussion. Mike also had several announcements. 1) The Student Satisfaction Survey is scheduled for this fall. Instead of taking class time, Mike asked if Dept. Chairs would agree that faculty could hand out the surveys to be completed outside class and then collect them at the next class. Dept. Chairs agreed to this method. 2) Book rental has been approved for GBC and will be available to students next year. The general process is that students provide a credit card as deposit. They are charged approximately half the cost of selected textbooks at the outset; books returned in good condition at the end of the semester will incur no further charges. Requirements for book rental include a commitment to use the test for four semesters; Follett has a list of textbooks which will qualify for rental. Phyllis in the GBC Bookstore has additional information. 3) Department Chairs should make sure that their Department Strategic Plan is updated at the end of this school year. 3 Proposed Evaluation Form for Department Chairs: The draft of the new form for evaluation was presented for comment and revision. Cyd McMullen and Ed Nickel answered questions about the rationale for change: that the current form does not reflect the job description of Department Chairs in the Policies and Procedures Manual. After discussion, the group voted to approve the new form, which will be submitted to the Faculty Evaluation Committee for their consideration. 4 INT 100: Department Chairs are responsible for finding faculty to represent their departments for the summer orientation dates, June 12 and August 6; those representatives should be forwarded to Cyd McMullen by April 30. Jan King added a reminder that there will be a regular INT 100 session on August 28 that will also require faculty participation. For INT 100 online, Cindy Hyslop has agreed to take on the creation of the course. A brainstorming meeting for the content of this online version will be held on April 23 for anyone who would like to give input. Those who cant attend but have ideas can send them to Cyd, who will take their ideas to the meeting. 5 Chair of Chairs for 2010-2011: Cyd McMullen stated that she would not be a member of Chairs next year and asked for the groups input on choosing a chair this spring to allow transition over the summer. Richard McNally volunteered to take on the position and was confirmed unanimously as the new chairperson. 6 Announcements: -David Ellefsen announced that the Library Book Sale begins on Monday 4/12 and goes all week. Goodies will also be available for purchase. -Patty Fox announced that the Student Art Exhibit will be held on Friday 4/3o after the Student Awards Ceremony from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. She also announced that the Art Departments exhibit cases will be moved to the Leonard Center for Student Life sometime next year so that student work will be more visible and accessible to students and the community. -Cyd McMullen asked for permission to write a letter from Dept . Chairs thanking Jackie Leonard whose family provided funding for the renovation of the student and community center. Dept. Chairs agreed that a letter would be appropriate.
