Program Updates EMS: This semester we have completed two EMT Basic classes totaling 26 students for Newmont Mining Company. The paramedic program that was scheduled to begin in the fall of 2010 has been postponed due to the budget crisis. An on-line EMT Basic Class is being developed for fall semester. The course work will be completed on line with meetings once a week on Saturdays for skills development and integration of didactic information into application. This is the first time GBC has offered an EMT-Basic class using the on-line component. An EMT Intermediate class will also be held using a similar format with on-line course work and skills sessions. This was successful last semester and the Nevada Division of Forestry has requested another class for upgrading their EMT Bs to the Intermediate level of practice. Employers have expressed that this is more economical for them. Some of the employees are permitted to do their course work on the job and this has cut down on the overtime costs. Karen Mowrey will be going to adjunct faculty for the Fall and the EMT program will be continued using adjunct faculty. Human Services: Mary, five students and adjunct faculty member were in Twin Falls at the human services regional conference. One student, Katherine Shearer-Pejic is presenting a poster display/log book and photos about her practicum experiences at Maple Star a counseling agency here in Elko. She will also be the recipient of the Outstanding Human Service Student Award. Generally, human services are focused on finishing/polishing the self study for program accreditation visit which hopefully can be scheduled soon. The regional representative for the national organization which accredits human services programs will be at the conference and will read over the draft of the self study. After her feedback, Mary hopes to submit the document the request a site visit. The process has already paid for through the HRSA grant funds (approx. $5,000). We are still waiting for word from Jeannie Rosenthal about whether or not we will be allowed to roll over the remaining HRSA grant funds of one more year, or whether we have to return the $120K+ funds at the end of the month. CNA Program: Jo reports that there were two Train the Trainer courses held in March and April 2010 with a total of 10 instructors completing the program. The majority of the instructors were from the Battle Mountain/Winnemucca area. At the present time there are 40 people on the waiting list for the summer CNA class. There is not an instructor for the class yet. The NSBN site visit will be sometime in mid July. Radiology: Mary reported that she believes there will approximately 20 applications for fall admission consideration. The Virtual radiology suite has been ordered and we are still waiting on the computers for the lab. The newly equipped classroom is very nice for the radiology students and faculty. The JRCERT visit is expected in for October 7-8, 2010. The Ultra Sound program has been eliminated and is accepting no new students. The two students presently in the program will be able to finish the program. Thirteen students will graduate in May 2010 and there presently ten first year students. The Regents Award winner was Ashley Reed and Greg Rangel the Outstanding Student Nursing Programs: AAS Nursing Ended up with 38 complete, on-time applications for this fall. Funding will be available for a 6th full-time faculty member and so we will plan on admitting 20 first-year students. The second year students did extremely well on their critical care nursing HESI tests. These students completed an ACLS course prior to taking the HESI test and so this helped them. All students are now ACLS certified which is a first for GBC. Karen Mowrey was instrumental in making this happen. Students are planning their pinning ceremony which will be on May 20th from 5-7pm in the theater and solarium. BSN: The curriculum changes were approved by C&A and Faculty Senate. Students will be required to only take one chemistry course (Chemistry 100). ENG 333 and Math 126 are no longer required, and an upper division nursing course (Health Care Informatics) has been added. There is no longer a clinical rotation requirement for NURS 338 and NURS 436. All current students have been advised of the changes. Those who might benefit from the changes have been told to change their catalog year. There are at least 15 second year nursing students who have expressed their interest in continuing this fall with the BSN program. There are 3 RNs who have also expressed an interest and who are in the process of applying. 7 individuals graduated this past December or will graduate this May with their BSN. Announcements/Updates: Diane has been appointed by the National League for Nursing to serve as the NLN ambassador to GBC. As part of her responsibilities, Diane will ensure that faculty are informed about NLN initiatives and the opportunities available to them for research grants, reduced program registration fees, reduced rates on NLN testing products, and certification. Diane successfully defended her dissertation this past Thursday. Margaret is running for District #8 Board of Regents Department Chair Fall 2010: Faculty members that are interested in the department chair are Amber Donnelli and Mary Doucette. Both expressed a willingness to split the duties of the position as long as those duties were specifically noted. Submitted: Karen Mowrey GREAT BASIN COLLEGE HEALTH SCIENCES COMMUNITY ADVISORY GROUP MEETING May 5, 2010 8am-9am GBC Berg Hall Conference Room Minutes 1. Welcome and Introductions Information See attached sign-in sheet 2. GBC Overview (President Diekhans) Carl provided a summary of what GBC has done in response to last years 12.5% budget cut on top of this years 6.9% and next years 6.9%. Examples of these include suspension of implementing the paramedic program and admitting students to the sonography program this fall; carrying 6 vacancies forward; offering buy-outs to qualified individuals; reduction in force of up to 5 positions; shifting several programs to community service versus state-funded programs; limiting tutoring, library services and open lab hours to students, etc. Carl is worried that these cuts will not be the end given that the federal stimulus dollars will go away and almost a billion dollars in tax revenue will sunset the end of next June. This creates a hole of 2.5 billion dollars in the 6.5 billion dollar state budget. Mike commented that these are very painful times given that we have been program builders and seen growing enrollment numbers. Being asked to shrink is very difficult. 3. ADN Program Information Margaret reported that there are 22 second year students and 22 first year students. There are 37 completed AAS applications. Goal is to admit 20. The Nevada Nurses of Achievement Scholarship Banquet will be held on May 14th in Reno. Jennifer Mahlberg and Ashley Olpin are the recipients for this year. This years Pinning Ceremony will be held on May 20th in GBC Theater and Solarium 5-7pm. Diane reported that the second year nursing students completed ACLS certification as part of their acute care nursing course. All successfully passed the certification exam and scored very well on their HESI test in critical care nursing. The second year students are also finishing their preceptorship rotations. First year student Janice Elliott reported that everyone was looking forward to having a break this summer but that all were extremely hard-working and very supportive of one another. The Student Nurses Organization was successful in establishing a National Student Nurses Association Chapter at GBC. The National Conference will be held in Salt Lake City next year and many will plan on going. Sylvia Elexpuru, Direct, Elko Senior Center, thanked the nursing students for providing educational programs to the Senior Center clients. She stated that they were very appreciative and learned a great deal from the students. Tami reported that 3 of the first-year nursing students were offered nurse apprentice positions at Highland Village. The hope is that the hospital will also open up some of these positions. As a result of Perkins funding, hope to purchase a maternity simulator and use this to support not only student nurse learning needs but RN needs in maternity at hospital. Certified Nursing Assistant Program Information Jo Dean was absent and so Margaret presented the following information provided by Jo. Since January of 2010 have held or finished eight CNA classes with approximately 12 15 students per class. More classes are scheduled to start in Ely in late May, another in Pahrump this summer, and two classes in Winnemucca this summer. Have held two Train the Trainer courses for 9 registered nurses who are now eligible to apply for an instructors license and teach CNA classes. So far four of these people have applied and are now ready to teach; one in Elko and three in Winnemucca. Testing has been really busy with Nevada State Board of Nursing CNA certificate testing offered the first Friday of every month. Each test day has been full with testing 10 12 students each testing day. Jo is planning to travel to Pahrump at the end of June to give a Train the Trainer course to potential instructors and administer the NSBN CNA testing there. At this time there are 7 students who would like to test in Pahrump and four RNs interested in the Train the Trainer course in Pahrump. Hopefully, this is the beginning of Pahrumps ability to have more classes and do their own NSBN testing. Are currently resupplying for next year and expect 250 300 students to enroll in the GBC CNA program from July, 2010 thru July 2011. BSN Program Information Margaret reported that there are a total of 7 individuals who graduated either last December or who will graduate this month. Five will be part of the pinning ceremony on May 20th. There are currently 10 students who are actively working on completing their BSN. To date, there are 14 applications for this fall, with additional requests coming in for advisement. The BSN curriculum was re-designed and changes include the removal of clinical rotations, a one versus two semester chemistry course requirement, the addition of a 9th upper division nursing course and compression of courses to allow for completion of the program in 4 semesters if a student goes on a full-time basis. EMS and Paramedic Programs Information Karen reported that a variety of EMS courses including EMT-Basic, ACLS. PALS, First Responder have been offered. The EMT Basic course has been converted to an online format. Students taking this course are required to also perform skills assessment sessions and testing at the college. The EMT Intermediate was previously converted to an online format and has been very popular. The online format allows individuals working weekends, evenings, etc. to complete training requirements. Radiology/Medical Imaging Programs Information Mary & Cherie reported that the new radiology lab is complete (Health Sciences Classroom #102). We are still waiting on the computer to house the software training program. The self-study was accepted and an accreditation site visit is scheduled for October 7th and 8th. Students are in the process of presenting their poster presentations and all Advisory Group members were invited to attend. The 2009/2010 Regents Scholar Award went to radiology student Ashley Reed. There are 24 applicants for this falls class; will accept 12 students. There are 10 first-year radiology students and 13 who will be graduating this month. One of the graduates has been accepted to Boise State. Second year students will be doing a thorough Board review during the week of finals in preparation of their national exams. Student placement continues to be throughout state including Pahrump, Ely, Winnemucca, Fallon and Carson City. There are 2 sonography students who will continue in the program through January in order for them to complete program requirements. This program will be suspended until budget situation improves. Both Mary and Cherie thanks NNRH and in particular adjunct faculty Bruce Jonas and Kelly Bell for their excellent support of students. Student feedback from Greg was very favorable. Did one of his clinical rotations in Pahrump and got to work with film versus digital format. Greg feels very well-prepared to work in a variety of radiology settings. Human Services Program Information Mary reported that the Human Services seems to be coming into its own. There are at least 80 individuals who have declared human services as their major and probably at least 20 more. Preceptorships have included MapleStar, Family Resource Center and Humboldt General Hospital. This Fall, students will be placed in Pahrump and Winnemucca. The program is in the process of being accredited and the self-study has been approved. Looking at a fall site-visit. Mary, adjunct faculty member, Cathy McAdoo and students recently attended the regional human services conference in Twin Falls at the College of Southern Idaho. One of GBCs human services students did a poster presentation and received very favorable feedback. The HRSA grant is ending this summer and requests are out to try and extend the funding for one more year. Still no word about this. Mary is working with UNLV to try and establish a 2+2 program so that GBCs human services students can continue their bachelors and possibly masters degrees through online means. Other Diane announced that she has accepted a Nursing Director position at Salt Lake Community College and will be leaving as of the first of June. Margaret announced that she will be stepping down from the Dean/Nursing Program Director positions as of 1 July. A replacement search is in progress. Submitted by: M.
