Program Updates: Certified Nursing Assistant Program (Jo Dean) CNA classes were conducted in Pahrump, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca, Ely and Elko for 2009 totaling 177 students! The program continues to gain popularity in Spring 2010 with a total of 76 students throughout GBCs service area. Nevada State Board of Nursing (NSBN) testing is held on the first Friday of every month at the Elko campus. Testing is held on the Ely campus on an as needed basis. To date, the number of students who have tested with the Nevada State Board of Nursing (NSBN) in Elko is 46 with a pass rate of 98%! This positively reflects the quality of the GBC program. Last semester Jo spent a great deal of time in Pahrump, Ely, Battle Mountain and Winnemucca working with the instructors to identify equipment/ supplies to strengthen and improve their programs. As a result of the CNA programs Pahrump, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca, Ely and Elko have had upgrades during the past year to their equipment and supplies. Improvements include new mannequins, beds, teaching videos, pulse oximeters (measures oxygen saturation in the blood) and various supplies. As the CNA program continues to expand, recruitment of more instructors is essential. Train the Trainer classes for CNA instructors will be held at GBC on the Elko Campus March 5 6, 2010, and April 1 2, 2010. The program is monitored for compliance with NSBN requirements. Full approval includes site visits every other year. A site visit is due this spring. ADN Program (Margaret Puccinelli) Nursing faculty has advised over 156 students since January 2009. Majority are interested in starting program this or next fall. Second year class (graduating class of 2010) combined with class admitted in Fall 2009 was largest group of associate degree students in history of program (total = 45). Class that graduated May 1009 achieved a 100% pass rate on National Licensing Examination for RNs. Currently have 6 full-time nursing faculty, 5 of whom are in state-supported, tenured track positions. The remaining position has been funded by Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital and Barrick Goldstrike. This funding will end as of June 2010. Associate degree nursing students provide 28,980 hours of clinical services to GBCs service area residents. Have over 39 clinical facility agreements with agencies throughout GBCs service area. Factoids re: first year students: Mean age = 29.7 None applied to other NSHE institutions; 25% applied to Idaho program and 25% applied to Oregon program. Factors that influenced their decision to pursue a nursing degree: Desire to care for others (81.8%) Interesting or exciting work (77.3% Job security (72.7%) Opportunity for challenging professional work (63.6%) Of the 23 who are scheduled to graduate this May: 3 will return to Winnemucca 2 will return to Reno 6-8 will be hired by NNRH (Elko) Remaining students will probably stay local and be employed by other health agencies in community. BSN Program (Margaret Puccinelli) 16 individuals have complete BSN program as of December 2009 3 more individuals are scheduled to graduate this May. Have 12 individuals who are currently in program Out of the 23 in the second year ADN Program: 12 have indicated that they want to continue with BSN this fall Have 4 other individuals who have expressed an interest in beginning BSN program this fall. Accreditation requires that faculty need to have a PhD or be in the process of getting PhD in order to teach at BSN level. Two nursing faculty are in process of completing PhD requirements (1 this year and 1 next year). EMS Program (Karen Mowrey) Fall 2009 GBC trained 34 First Responder students from Newmont Gold Corporation. In March 2010 this group of students will continue on to EMT Basic course. Currently there is an EMT Basic Course is in progress with 12 students enrolled. The internet enhanced EMT Intermediate course offered last semester is becoming an increasingly popular course due to the flexibility of on-line course work. We have had several requests from employers to offer this course again. We developing the EMT Basic and First Responder classes in the same on-line format to be offered in the fall semester. Rosanne Gignac adjunct faculty, became an AHA BLS instructor which will further enhance our offerings of AHA BLS courses to individuals in our service area. BLS certification is required for nursing, CNA, EMS, and diagnostic imaging classes. The paramedic associate degree program is moving forward. The program was approved by the Curriculum and Articulation Committee and Faculty Senate approval for the February meeting. The AAS Emergency Medical Services program is scheduled to begin in fall of 2010 pending Regent approval. In March we will be presenting the American Heart Association (AHA) ECG/Pharmacology and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course for fourth semester nursing students. Successful completion of the skills and written exam will result in AHA ACLS certification. Radiology/Medical Imaging Programs (Mary Doucette, Cherie Jaques) High lights of 2009 included the following: Mary Doucette Program Director Mary was awarded her masters degree from UNR in December 2009. Submitted the self study for accreditation with the Joint Review Commission on Education in Radiology Technology (JRCERT). Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) certificate program began in August 2009 instructed by Cherie Jacques. To be awarded a certificate, the student must complete 52 credits beyond the AAS RT degree. Purchase of an X-ray machine and conversion of HSCI 102 to Medical Imaging skills lab. The program continues to expand in 2010 Mary Doucette was officially recognized as Program Director by the JRCERT. Self study is complete and the site visit will be within the next 6 months. The DMS program have started clinical rotations To date, there are 22 students enrolled in the Radilogy Exploration class for March 1, 2010. Twenty (20) applications for the RT program and six (6) applications for the DMS program are anticipated for fall of 2010. Thirteen (13) students are scheduled to graduate in May 2010. The Medical Imaging lab was completed and classes began in the lab on February 8, 2010. Human Services Program (Mary Ray) The program is doing very well and continues to grow in 2010. As of fall 2009, there were 61 declared human services majors, and 110 total students enrolled in human services classes. Five practicum experiences were completed and or continuing into 2010. Currently, 118 students are enrolled in human services classes. Mary was nationally certified as Human Service Practitioner. She is among the first 500 practitioners to be certified in the country. The GBC Human Services Program application for national accreditation, and the self-study of the program is ongoing for 2010. Adjunct faculty include Leslie Preston MFT in the fall of 2009. Currently Cathy McAdoo, Director for the PACE Coalition is sharing her expertise in addiction prevention by co-teaching the PCD 116 Substance Abuse Fundamentals online. A meeting was held with Larry Ashlet from UNLV in fall of 2009 in order to collaborate about creating a pathway for GBC students to pursue advanced degrees in Human Services and professional counseling through online study. Students have already contacted Dr. Ashlet in order to pursue this opportunity. Continued funding for the Program is a concern; the HRSA grant ends April 30, 2010. The following was written by Phyllis Gibson, a second year nursing student who assisted for one week in Haiti over the holiday break. We arrived in Port au Prince, Haiti just days after the earthquake happened. My first impression flying over the area in the airplane was likened to an ant hill that someone has stepped on and tried to obliterate. People were continually on the go and going nowhere. A quick triage told me that if a person was moving about, they must at least be stable. We were taken to a medical tent, given a quick tour and started seeing people right away. Some had been there before we arrived and people were coming in as we started to work. We saw crush injuries that I never thought the body could endure and yet live. People were dazed, in shock and sometimes just needed a kind person to help them. We assisted with many amputations of limbs from being crushed. In third world countries an amputation may be a death sentence in the fact that the person may not have the care afterward that they need and they will slowly die. There are no welfare programs or social service or physical therapy for these people. They are on their own. The heat was oppressive and the humidity was high. The dust in the air would lay on me as a second skin. In some areas the stench was unbearable due to decay. We were treated very well. We slept in the medical tents and ate a lot of meals ready to eat (MREs). We had a driver that would take us around daily to see what was happening. We saw dead bodies piled up waiting for someone to either claim them or dispose of them properly. Looters were looting anything and everything. We saw things that are too horrific to discuss but is a fact of life in third world countries in a time of disaster. There was not a day that did not go by that I did not sit and cry with someone, hold a hand, give a hug or laugh with joy. Some days I wondered if there was a God and other days I knew God was there with us. On a daily basis, deep sorrow and heightened joy could happen within minutes of each other. I sat one night and held an approximately nine month old baby until he died in my arms in the early morning hours. The rescuers found him in a rubble pile with no signs of a caregiver nearby. His crushed body would not sustain him any longer. These people needed hope and sometimes there was none to give. I worked with some wonderful people from around the world. Some spoke English very well and for others, English was a chore. My communication skills were given a workout and it is amazing how, when in a crisis, one can learn to communicate without words. Every day I thank God for the land I live in, the life that I have and the skills I possess to be able to help some else. Being a nurse is truly the greatest accomplishment of my life and I can share that with others in times of need.
