The paramedic student receives anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and medication administration instruction as well as training in advanced medical skills. Extensive course work, clinical experience and field experience are required. The paramedic program prepares the graduate to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) examination and become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P). The proposed AAS in Emergency Medical Services will be the first paramedic program offered in GBCs service area. Although other Paramedic Programs exist within the NSHE system, their physical distance from GBCs service area precludes rural/frontier pre-hospital personnel from accessing them. This program meets emerging training needs and enhances services for the nontraditional working student in local industries throughout GBCs service area. The program is committed to offering a flexible program of study in terms of on-line technology to deliver distance education with weekend skills training and seminars. Pending Regent approval the Emergency Medical Services Paramedic program will be offered in the fall semester of 2010. EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PARAMEDIC PROGRAM INFORMATION: The Emergency Medical Services Paramedic Program is included in GBCs Five Year Strategic Plan. Faculty- GBC has the advantage of having the Lead Faculty member on staff. This individual is an EMT Intermediate with 36 years of experience, a Registered Nurse and nursing faculty member with EMS RN certification. Other adjunct faculty include the following: An EMS RN and critical care flight nurse, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a flight paramedic, and four EMT Intermediate EMS instructors to teach the EMT-Basic classes and EMT Intermediate classes. Louis Bergeron, M.D. will serve as our program Medical Director, as well as teach in the program. The Ruby Crest Emergency Medical group has offered assistance in instruction. Funding- There will be no initial start up costs associated with the program. The coordinator/lead instructor and equipment are already in place. The Health Sciences lab will continue to serve the EMS and nursing programs. Due to the large number of students who use the lab, we are considering converting HSCI room 106 to an EMS/Advanced nursing skills lab. We are applying for a Perkins Grant this spring (2010) for this purpose. It is anticipated that enrollment-based formula funding will support the program. Admission to the Program- The completion of the admission application to GBC. Completion of the AAS Emergency Medical Services Paramedic application. Admission to the program is a separate process from admission to Ĵý. Admission is limited and students are admitted only in the fall semester to begin the sequence of paramedic courses. Copy of a current Nevada EMT-Basic and one year of experience on an ambulance service or rescue unit, or current Nevada EMT-Intermediate/85 certification. Three (3) letters of recommendation from employers, ambulance directors or other professional reference that includes verification of experience. Resume (including EMS work history). Copy of current AHA Healthcare provider CPR or ARC Professional Rescuer CPR certification. Letter of Intent to enter the program. HESI Entrance Examination (math, reading, comprehension, and vocabulary). Once admitted to the program, all students must submit the following information in conjunction with their enrollment to the paramedic courses: Completion of the physical examination form completed and signed by a physician, physicians assistant, or a certified nurse practitioner. Current tetanus immunization within the last ten years. Hepatitis B three dose series or positive titer (must be started before the class begins in the fall. If it is determined at a later date, that any of the above requirements have not been met, the student will be required to withdraw from the Paramedic Program.
