Chanrithy Him This speaker may come during Empowerment Week to speak about living under the Khmer Rouge regime. Maybe Him could speak in the afternoon? A suggestion was made to show The Killing Fields, which might give some context regarding Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge regime and the Viet Nam conflict before the speaker came to GBC. It would be great if the film could be shown IAV, so outlying campuses could see the film. There was also a suggestion to ask the High School Social Studies classes to come to see Him. Who should ICE contact at the HS? The Human Services grant will cover the costs of this speaker. There will be much planning needed in January. Film Festival The committee is narrowing down their selection of films and looking at possibly showing some shorts. There is a possibility of having a 6th film. The possibility of having 6 films appealed to everyone, but the theater schedule may need to be modified. Half of the films will be English speaking and the other half foreign. The committee asked Jeannie about sponsors for the event. Jeannie emailed the Foundation and was told they had the exact same sponsors for the Dinner Dance. Jeannie will talk to John and Patty about the sponsors. The Film Festival Committee cannot approach the sponsors until the Foundation gives its approval. ICE does not want the Film Festival to conflict with the Dinner Dance. ICE might be able to help the Foundation promote the Dinner Dance if the Film Festival is not the same weekend. Caf X has approved the festival taking responsibility for the food and refreshments. Film Festival would like to serve wine before some of the films. They will have to pay bartenders to serve the wine; the DLC might provide them. The comment was made that the committee needs to be really careful to follow the liquor laws. Angie and Mardell said that the Soroptomists and Rodeo groups had to keep track of every drink sold and had to pay a tax on each. As for publicity, Carol Petrie who does freelance publicity, will be used again. Lisa said she does a great job. Posters and postcards will be done by Media Services. The next Film Festival meeting will be Jan. 6th. Argentum Lynne reported that the committee found someone to do the layout. Liberty Whittle, a part time faculty member will be doing it. Lynne will also be meeting with Joyce Shaw about how to go about doing the submissions. The first edition should be out in January. Lynne will let everyone know when the next meeting is. MLK The Choraliers would be interested in doing the event in 2011, but this year they will not have time. Jeannie said that she asked the Faculty Senate for ideas and Patty Fox said that there is a PBS film about Joan Baez and how the Folk singer and Dr. King worked together on the Civil Rights Movement. Jeannie will find more out about the film and see if ICE can show it. Lynne reminded the committee that MLK day is a day of service and asked if anyone had any ideas on what could be done. A book drive where books are donated to NYTC or the County library was suggested. Lynne mentioned that maybe ICE is running out of time to do anything for MLK day. A suggestion was made to put up a display in the library. There was a concern that there would not be enough tangible items for a display. Jeannies student worker, Katie said she will ask her friend if she has anything to bring in for a library display because she completed an educational unit on MLK. Katie will also ask her friend if she would want to talk or teach her lesson as an event for MLK day. The Tuesday after MLK day would be a good day to do it because classes start then, so students and faculty will be back. Karen stated that the book drive may conflict with the librarys book sale. Maybe ICE could ask people to donate food? Angie will talk to Terry Clark with Communities and Schools about their backpack and snack program. Dr. Brunos Lecture ICE will help support the lecture. Angie stated that Dr. Bruno will speak on January 22nd. Hopefully he will be able to speak longer, perhaps from 12:00-1:30PM. The topic is Sexual Abuse of Children. Early childhood education classes and social work classes should be invited. ICE should get a mailing list of students in education and social work classes together. Joni Morris Jeannie reminded everyone that Morris will be willing to take ticket sales at the door for her fee. She will either be here the 14th or the 21st of October depending on what night the Eureka Opera House gets her. Jeannie will have more information later. The Big Read Joshua Cane, who performs a one-man act highlighting Edgar Allen Poe is an option to incorporate into The Big Read. Jeannie will find out about his availability and cost. The Big Read will not be connected to Red Ribbon Week; there is too much going on that week, so events will need to take place earlier in the month of October. Showing a film was suggested. There is a blanket agreement regarding showing films for Nevada libraries. In order to not have to pay extra film fees; the film should be one that is available under this blanket. At this point, money for the event is not worked out. A grant would be great, but even if a grant is not awarded the basics could still be done because most of Poes works are available in a free format. This means there wont be any books to handout, but the event will still be doable. Grants The Nevada Arts Council Grant is due February 2nd 2010. The Big Read NEA grant is due February 2nd 2010. The Nevada Humanities grant is due March 10th 2010. At this point Jeannie can only get one grant per project, but maybe if she could go through other departments more grants could be available for separate projects. Programming for 2011 ICE needs to start thinking about the Film Festival, The Big Read, etc. Should ICE pursue more Chautauquas? Maybe for MLK day in 2011 ICE could get speakers who were part of the Little Rock Nine? Page PAGE 3 of NUMPAGES 3 ';<= , .
