RDT Jeannie thanked everyone for their help. Jeannie thought the attendance was a little low, but it was still quite a success. There were 126 attendees. The Committee discussed finances related to RDT and in general. It was determined that ICE is on track for future events and is sitting well. ICE has not budgeted for Cowboy Poetry yet. ICE needs to complete a final report for the Nevada Arts Council. Letters need to be written to legislators letting them know what ICE did with NAC money. Angie offered to help with this and Jeannie will give her information needed to write the letters. Mary asked about the evaluations from the RDT performance. Jeannie will get them to her to collate. Overall the evaluations were extremely positive. Everyone (who filled out the evaluation form) enjoyed the performance and many indicated they would like events like RDT to happen more often in Elko. Angie reported that the Spring Creek HS cheerleaders loved the RDT workshop. Jeannie received an email from RDT; they were very pleased with the turn out and the experience. They want to come back and are hoping to be able to make their performance more edgy next time. Argentum Jeannie and Lynne met with Mike McFarlane to discuss the ground rules. Argentum will be open to faculty, staff and students, but primarily to students. It will be open to all campuses and outlying areas. There is no theme set as of yet. The look will be similar to the old Argentum. Mikes office has agreed to provide some funding and the Nevada Arts Council may be able to fund as well through a project grant. ICE can apply for funding from the Nevada Arts Council every year. Lynne tried to get a hold of Paulette to discuss any interest SGA might have in the project. Argentum will be under ICE for the time being, but eventually will be its own program. Lynne hopes that this years edition will come out by the end of April. Submissions will be due after students and teachers come back from Spring Break in March. The selection process will be based on artistic merit, not by a quota from each campus. This means some campuses may not be represented each time. An online submission version will eventually be implemented to cut down on printing costs. Mike had suggested that at some point, a DVD might accompany the actual Argentum booklet. The DVD would include performing arts, etc. that cannot be included in the booklet. In this way students can submit dance and music. Wyoming asked about the process for submissions. Jeannie said there are still many decisions to be made. Past guidelines will be implemented. There will be a sub-committee for selecting the content. It was suggested that it might be possible to incorporate the submission process into art classes. Someone from ICE could ask to attend an Art Department meeting to discuss this. It was asked where the name Argentum came from and it was explained that the name comes from the derivative of the Latin word for silver. Jeannie was asked to be sure to let everyone at Faculty Senate know Argentum was underway. It was suggested that she bring an older version of Argentum as a visual aid. Spring Events Two speakers are scheduled for Cowboy Poetry-Nick Spitzer (creator and voice of American Routes, a weekly two-hour program devoted to vernacular music, musicians and cultures) and Henry Real Bird (recently named Montanas Poet Laureate). Nick Spitzer will be speaking in GTA 130 on January 28th from 1:00-2:15PM. This is an IAV room so Elko will broadcast to the following areas and rooms: Battle Mountain, GBC BM 1 Ely, GBC 112 Pahrump, GBC PVC 120 Wendover, GBC Wendover HS T2 Winnemucca, GBC 108 Henry Real bird will provide a writing workshop in the Academic Success Center on January 28th at 2:30pm. He will also provide an illustration workshop in GTA 122 on January 29th from 1:00-3:45PM. The locations can be changed if need be. The information for these speakers will be going into the Western Folklife Center Program. Everything will be open to the public. ICE will be sponsoring speakers with posters, publicity and facilities. Film Festival There are 7 members on the subcommittee, consisting of ICE members and community members. There will be a mixture of films so that there will be something for everyone. Lisa asked how the committee can best get students and young people to come to the festival. There will be updates on Facebook to let students know. Lisa asked if Wyoming could get the word out in his Film class. Wyomings class does not run in the spring. The festival will run from Thursday to Sunday. There will be two films on Saturday. The committee is looking into sponsorship from the community for refreshments. The Committee still needs to collaborate with Xavier Leveau/Caf X and the GBC Foundation. Marsha Holford has offered to order the films and the committee will get her all the information as early in December as possible. In early December there will be a meeting to get the plans underway. Committee hasnt discussed speakers yet. A suggestion was made to bring a film critic like Robin Hollowbird. Another suggestion was made to include films made in Nevada. The festival committee was currently discussing lowering ticket prices to $5 and having package deals for all the days of the festival as well as obtaining rights for film shorts. Barbara Martinez Jitner ICE will be able to get Jitner to come speak. The tentative time is the first week of March. Jeannie still needs to put in a firm offer. Jeannie asked if Committee still wanted to bring her. Committee agreed; Jeannie will put in offer. A portion of her fee goes to the Amnesty International. Jeannie will try to get the movie, Bordertown (about the femicide and violence going on in Juarez). Maybe SGA would be interested in showing this on their movie night? Perhaps ICE could show the movie a couple of times so more people will get the chance to see it. The movie will be separate from the Film Festival. Empowerment Week Committee needs ideas on what to do. The theme is Human Rights. Jitner will be speaking during Empowerment Week. Lynne really wants people to be excited about it. Could ICE ask Faculty to incorporate Empowerment Week into their curriculum? ICE would like to pursue faculty speakers to address issues involving Human Rights. Mary suggested a speaker who survived the Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia. Mary saw her speak before and said it was very moving. She has funds in the Human Services Account; she will find out if there is any available money to help bring this speaker. Mary will look into how much it would cost to bring the speaker to GBC. Maybe ICE can get the Khmer Rouge speaker to come earlier in the week instead of later. Maybe ICE could get someone to talk about the history surrounding the Khmer Rouge before the speaker comes to campus? A Chautauqua speaker could also be approached to participate in the weeks activities. ICE needs to focus on pulling things together for Empowerment Week so people are aware of everything going on next semester. Talent Showcase (in conjunction with Empowerment Week) Last years showcase was a little disappointing; it was hard to get people excited about it. Perhaps because it was tied to Empowerment Week, people were confused on what to do for their talent. There was also maybe too many things going on at the time. ICE has decided not to do it this year. It was suggested instead there could be a Poetry Slam, possibly tied to Argentum. It was suggested ICE look into working with SGA to possibly host the Slam. Another idea instead of the Talent Showcase was to include a Brown Bag Seminar, which would be more educational and occur during the lunch hour. MLK Celebration Lynne reported that the Elko High School Choraliers sounded hesitant and that the songs are not in their repertoire. Lynne will keep trying. Speakers Bureau A suggestion was made to ask GBC faculty and/or faculty from other NSHE institutions if they would be willing to speak at GBC on topics of their interest/expertise. There could even be a formal lecture series. Pete Bagley already indicated he would be interested in speaking about China (where he did his sabbatical) if ICE let him know what time line the committee wanted. It was suggested that a good time for him to speak might be close to the Chinese New Year. Talks could also continue after Empowerment Week and as well as all throughout the semester. This could bring faculty together in a really positive way. It was suggested that ICE could send a GBC-All email with a questionnaire for the faculty to fill out so that the committee would know who was interested and what topics were available. The Big Read Application due February 2nd. The theme is Edgar Allen Poe. The speaker being considered for the event is Joshua Cane. Cane is a one-man act that portrays Poes works and committee members were encouraged to look him up on the internet. A suggestion was made to see if IAV could be used to reach the whole service area (book discussion groups, etc.). The Committee thought this was a good idea and wants to pursue it. Policies ICE discussed whether there should be a process for faculty to follow when they would like to bring a speaker to the college. Should there be a more formal form? What kinds of guidelines? Perhaps this would help get faculty more involved. Adjourned: 3:45PM Page PAGE 2 of NUMPAGES 4 :AB4 h k !
