Visitors: Mike McFarlane and Karen Martin Not present: Greg Molyneux and Cherie Jaques Dr. McFarlane met with our committee to discuss the program review for the General Education Program that takes place this academic year. The committee will review and evaluate the Gen Ed objectives and outcomes and see if they are being met by individual gen ed classes. We will look at the strengths and weaknesses of the General Education Program and create a self-study report that is due by mid-spring. Mike will find an outside reviewer to review the report. The committee needs to find where cover sheets for each gen ed class are stored, then determine if instructors are addressing the gen ed objectives in their classes. Susanna Dorr will put the gen ed cover sheets in the Assessment Committee website so that instructors will know what criteria they have to meet. Kathy Schwandt raised the point that measurement of outcomes can be problematic, and Dr. McFarlane said that some institutions have a gen ed exit exam. The committee also discussed the idea that GBC has never had an assessment tool to assess student learning. The Assessment Committee hopes to present workshops on classroom assessment this spring to address this. Dr. McFarlane told the committee that we do not have to solve the problems we find, but only report them. The committee also discussed the idea that adjunct faculty (and some full-time faculty) may not be certain of how the gen ed outcomes fit into their classes and how they should address the outcomes in their classes. Susanne Dorr said that this process will fit into the faculty evaluation process as instructors meet with each other to review their syllabi. She will put a link on the evaluation page to the assessment tools that the committee developed last year. Kathy Schwandt proposed that we encourage faculty to develop questions for student to answer to see how the objectives were addressed. The question may be something such as: How well did the instruction of X heighten your learning? She also proposed that we look to see if the gen ed objectives written several years ago are still relevant. Chair Bentley assigned each committee member an objective to review. We will also ask department chairs to review the objectives as they relate to the gen ed classes in their programs.
