Not Present: Stacie Potter, Joyce Shaw 1. Topic: Introductions/New members Introduced members and new members and why everyone joined ICE. Some reasons why ICE was their choice: ICE brings different voices to the college and it connects community. It also brings diversity and integrates students to cultural life. It is really important to bring in different voices. 2. Topic: Chair/Co-Chair All are in favor of Jeannie and Lynne being Co-Chairs of the committee. Jeannie will still speak at large functions and facilitate meetings. 3. Topic: Spring 2009 Retreat/Strategic Plan Overview & Mission Statement & Goals What does ICE mean? Intellectual Cultural Enrichment. Put full description under acronym on banners, fliers, etc. Brand ICE so people know it is a quality program. Possible pitch or slogan: ICE is Cool. Instead of the word maintain? Other words: create, expand, promote. Try and get bigger events and bands. When events go to Wendover or Reno they have to pass through on I-80 anyways, maybe ICE can get a discount on prices. Bring bigger events on campus, such as Battle of the Bands. Discussed how to get the word out about ICE: Fliers, radio, TV, Facebook/Myspace, word of mouth. More presence of ICE in housing and at SGA meetings and in the community was suggested. Possibly Student Peer representing ICE at R.A. meetings? 4. Topic: Board of Regents Presentation-Diversity Presentation includes Angie and Jeannie from 8am-9:30am on 9/18 in the GBC Fitness Center; this is a great chance for ICE to demonstrate all it does on campus. 5. Topic: 2010 Film Festival Instead of running film festival over several Saturdays, possibly do one film festival over a long weekend; Thursday through Sunday? Showing independent films instead of just foreign is an idea being tossed around. Possible month: February or March, the weather is still cold and maybe more students will get involved since it is something to do during the cold months. Possible theme: Human Rights. Everyone at meeting seemed to really like this idea. 6. Topic: Utah Repertory Dance Theatre Dance group is pricey, so sell tickets for $15-still affordable for students. Performance is on 10/21 at 7pm. Goal is to fill the theater. Group needs several stage hands to help with loading and unloading equipment. Jeannie asked for people to ask around for volunteers. Dance group will be in Elko for 3 days, will go into community schools to present and hold workshops (still waiting on Antoinette Cavanaugh, may suggest Charter school). If community schools will not work out, maybe group can hold classes and workshops at GBC? 7. Topic: 2009-2010 Academic Year- Theme: Human Rights (Empowerment Week?) A big thank you needs to go to Foundation, they donated $10,000. With this donation there is now about $16,000 in the ICE account. The speaker coming in March (first week is the target date, but speaker has not been contacted for availability yet) is Barbara Martinez-Jitner. ICE could possibly charge for this speaker. Can human rights be built into instructors curriculum to enhance empowerment week? 8. Topic: Nevada Shakespeare Company/Shakespeare in the Canyon Nevada Shakespeare Company wants to perform Macbeth in Lamoille Canyon, does GBC want to partner? GBC could write a grant to help fund this. Jeannie will attend conference call for more information and report back to committee. 9. Topic: Big Read 2010 & Joshua Cane Edgar Allan Poe is the proposed author. The committee members think he is a good choice because he appeals to both females and males. Bringing Poe is a great way to get males to read! Yong Pratt suggested a dance/movement workshop based on Poe. It might be an option to connect Poe with Halloween and Red Ribbon Week on campus and at the dorms. 10. Topic: Future Planning Possibly getting faculty to speak to an audience on campus about what they do. How can ICE/college compensate them? Got the idea from a newspaper article about Gary Hanington about what he does, A Day in the Life of. Committee members are on board. Open to staff, not just faculty. Also, getting professors from other colleges/universities would be good. GBC needs to be the heart of discussions and current events in the community. If students got a credit for attending a series of lectures, this could compensate speakers and give students credit. This could be an ongoing project, does not need to be on topic for current event at college. 11. Topic: Old/New Business Argentum-anyone interested? Lisa said that the English Department had brought Argentum up at their meeting as well. She will contact them to find out who is really interested. The members of the ICE committee agreed that they were interested. It was also stated that it would be nice to have a GBC newspaper and/or magazine. The issues do not have to come out every day/week but even just once in awhile. Irma stated she was definitely on board with Argentum. Lynne Owens agreed to be the official contact for anyone interested in working on Argentum. 12. Adjournment Meeting adjourned at 3:50pm. PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 1 EGNX ! : ; ?
