He announced that we are going forward to fill two tenure-track positions in Business and Theatre. The relevant departments are responsible for determining the job descriptions for each position to be advertised as soon as possible, with hiring for Spring 2010 if possible. Mike has invited the departments to ask for adjunct and/or temporary positions as needed; so far, positions have been hired in English and CTE. Mike also announced the two positions have been vacated during the summer: Pat OHanahan has retired from COT, and Gregory Schmaltz (Science Pahrump) has accepted a position in British Columbia. Mike asked Department Chairs to reprioritize the remaining open faculty positions to include these new openings. Mike also reported on hiring and open positions in Administration and Classified Staff. Some positions, including VP of Administrative Services and Dean of Extended Studies, will be held open in case further budget cuts are made and money must be returned to the State. Bill Verbeck will be devoting much of his time to a new project with the Career Connection Center, and some of his Directors duties will be assumed by a new Pahrump manager to be hired as soon as possible. Hiring for the Math/Science Department administrative assistant is in progress and should be completed by next week. Other classified positions are also being advertised; however, some open positions are also on hold pending a better economic picture. Enrollments Enrollments are currently 18.5% above last year on this date, putting current enrollment at about 1650. Glen Tenney asked for clarification about the minimum enrollment in courses. Mike replied that there is no standard number; 10 is preferred, but in some programs and upper-division courses, a class can run with 5. Below 5 is problematic. He advised us to wait until next week to cancel classes as the week before classes start usually sees heavy enrollment. Budgets For the present, budgets for all departments and programs have been restored to 2008 levels. Mike advised chairs to spend down lab fees on expenses directly related to students, because accumulated lab fees will be interpreted as charging unnecessarily high fees. Strategic Planning/Assessment The inservice schedule includes two sessions devoted to the strategic plan. Mike wants all faculty to attend one of the sessions. At the sessions, the new , easy-to-use website for strategic planning will be introduced; it will allow chairs to update department plans semester by semester. The plan sent to the Regents in August was basically the same as the plan faculty saw and commented on last spring. Web Campus Mike announced that Lisa Frazier is trying to head off problems with schedule changes in Web Campus. If faculty want to split a class into smaller sections, the Web Campus office should be informed of it by Tuesday, 8/25. For any schedule changeparticularly adding a K1 sectionLisa or her office must be informed first to prevent erasing any work already performed on a class site. INT 100 Orientation The fall orientation to be held on Saturday, August 29, has more than 300 students enrolled in Elko, 500 plus over our service area. At least two faculty members from each department should be on campus between 12:00 and 1:00 in order to greet students and answer questions. Students will be asked to complete a newly-designed survey form this year to collect feedback on the orientation process. Chairs are reminded that beginning Spring 2010, orientation will be the shared responsibility of Student Services and the Academic Departments. Dept. Chairs will be responsible for outlining the academic portion of the orientation which will then be carried out by the individual departments. The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 PM.
