Not present: John Rice, Glen Tenney, Connie Zeller, John Cashell, and Susanna Dorr. We discussed different ways to conduct an in-service workshop for faculty in the fall 2009 semester on using Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs). The committee members present agreed to serve on the committee next year in order to provide continuity in developing and presenting the in-service workshop. We will develop an assessment fair (perhaps called Assessment Fest) with six different stations. Faculty members can visit various stations to receive information on conducting classroom assessments in the following areas: Student study skills Class feedback Beginning of the semester questions and expectations Feedback on teaching Feedback on elements of the course Student thinking skills The committees goals are to develop ways to make classroom assessments meaningful for faculty and easy to do, develop online forms for reporting classroom assessment findings, and develop some suggestions for the long-term storage of the findings. Forms that are categorized and easily retrievable will aid in both the strategic planning processes and future accreditation visits. We propose storing the forms electronically but are not sure who will be responsible for keeping them. About 70 classroom assessment techniques exist. We will narrow down the choices for CATs for the in-service workshop, and provide ways for faculty to get more CATs if they choose to. We envision that faculty will conduct classroom assessments in Week 4, at midterm, and in Week 12 in order to get ongoing student feedback on the faculty members teaching, student learning, and class objectives. At the end of the semester, the faculty member will write a reflection on what he or she learned from the classroom assessments, how the instructor will use the information, and how the instructor will adjust their teaching as a result of the assessment. We are currently working on developing a form for faculty to fill out online. The form will also be part of the annual evaluation self-reflection. In online classes, we see a need to make the CAT that students will fill out a gateway document, meaning that students cannot progress to another assignment until they have completed the current CAT. Pat will check on this. Susanna Dorr has created a Web through the Assessment Committee report on the Faculty Senate Webpage for the committee to post and share documents. Committee members will read the Classroom Assessment: A Manual for Faculty Developers before the next meeting to get ideas for the upcoming workshop. We will also give more consideration to the details of the forms we will develop.
