B&EF0IF"CfJJLEJ EP >^,$ EE IFPPPPJ : EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR HEALTH SCIENCES Position Description, Responsibilities, and Role April 22, 2008 Background The State of Nevada has experienced tremendous growth over the last several decades and, as a result, has found the delivery of quality health care lagging demand. The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has a primary role in closing the gap between demand and supply of health care, as well as producing state-of-the-art research and clinical experiences that advance the quality dimension. Starting in 2006, NSHE took the first major steps to establish a statewide and system-wide program to address these efforts the NSHE Health Sciences System (HSS) represents a collaboration of all eight NSHE institutions and relies on their numerous existing programs in the health sciences fields as a foundation. A critical step in moving forward has been the recruitment of an Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC) for the HSS in fall 2007. This individual has the essential responsibilities to further the collaborations among NSHE institutions around these existing programs and to provide academic and strategic leadership in advancing planning and new initiatives. This document concisely states the role, responsibilities and expectations for the new Executive Vice Chancellor position and represents the current, mutual understanding of the university presidents (Ashley and Glick), Nevada State College president (Maryanski), and two NSHE Executive Vice Chancellors (Klaich and Trevisan). Basic Principles We draw on the Salmon Summit of 2006 for the first basic principles in establishing both the HSS and the EVC position: The HSS is a major priority of the NSHE; Development of the HSS must be based on demonstrated state needs and accomplished with a system-wide perspective; Processes must enable stakeholder support, especially faculty; Communications both externally and internally are critical for success and the EVC will take the lead in these communications; All eight NSHE institutions must be involved; All colleges and academic units including their faculty and physical resources will remain a part of their current, respective university or college; Research monies generated through scholarly activity shall remain at the NSHE institution which has appointed the scholar; All current reporting lines between presidents and their vice presidents, deans and directors shall remain intact; The institutional academic leadership for health sciences programs shall collaborate closely with the EVC; None of these principles is cast-in-stone, and all parties must remain open to the good faith deliberations underlying these initial principles; and The ultimate goal shall be to establish a health sciences system that has national distinction and serves Nevadas needs. Executive Vice Chancellor Responsibilities Provide academic and strategic leadership, in conjunction with the Presidents, for the enhancement of programs and the development of inter-institutional health science academic, research, and clinical programs within the NSHE to facilitate collaboration and promote efficiency and effectiveness Facilitate and lead NSHE inter-institutional communication in the health science fields and enhance the visibility of HSS at the local, state and national level Coordinate, with the NSHE institutions, external relationships with educational, clinical, and research partners Engage external stakeholders ( medical community, hospitals, private centers and institutions) in HSS activities Lead HSS fund-raising efforts and ensure cooperation of development efforts in health-related areas with the Presidents and institutional foundation trustees Establish a vision and strategic plan for the HSS, engaging the academic leadership of the NSHE health sciences programs, in consultation with a Visiting Committee of nationally prominent health professionals Develop, with the assistance and support of the Presidents, collaborative working relationships and open communication avenues with the Provosts and Deans or Directors of health-related programs Participate in Council of Presidents meetings as a peer Work with an Executive Council, composed of the Presidents of the four-year institutions to develop HSS policies, strategies, and budgets Allocate system-level HSS resources in consultation with the Executive Council (Presidents will allocate institution-level health science resources in consultation with the Executive Council) Communicate both internally and externally on health science system matters, including budget, strategy, resources, and policies, with Executive Council concurrence Support presidents in their missions and receive support from presidents ._fgpq|}a b [ r 1MOKXKLMԼԲԲԲԥԲԥԥԥԊzm`h}rhV&uOJQJ^Jh}rh7OJQJ^Jh}rhn?57OJQJ^Jh}rhn?7OJQJ^Jh}rh}rOJQJ^Jh}rhBOJQJ^Jh}rOJQJ^Jh}r5OJQJ^Jh}rh$OJQJ^Jh}rhn?OJQJ^Jh}rhn?5OJQJ^Jh}rhn?5CJOJQJ^J%._opq|} }W & Fgdn?gdn?h^hgdn? h^ `hgdn? $h^ha$gdn?1Yl{MH8 $ & Fa$gd7 & FgdV&u & Fgdn?h^hgdn? !r7h}rh7OJQJ^JhqOJQJ^Jh-OJQJ^Jh}rhV&uOJQJ^Jh}rhn?OJQJ^J,1h/ =!"#$% ^ 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~_HmH nH sH tH @`@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k (No List HH i Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJPK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
