Ad-hoc member: Bonnie Hofland. Not present: John Cashell, Mari Hunter, John Rice, Our committee met to review a draft report of our findings from our assessment project of general education student learning outcomes that took place in the fall 2008 semester. We also discussed the development of an assessment plan, which Dr. McFarlane requested. Ad-hoc committee member Bonnie Hofland presented a draft of a plan that she developed as part of an internship she did at GBC. Bonnies in-depth plan proposes the creation of a Ĵý Assessment Team that assesses various functions and programs of the college. It also includes a timeline of an assessment process. Our committee discussed that assessment needs to be tied to the allocation of resources, and there is also a need fro some group to ensure that faculty are complying with the request for data collection. Some further needs discussed were the development of a committee that oversees institutional assessment. This is separate from the current Faculty Senate Assessment Committee. This new committee would be the GBC Assessment Team and consist of membership representing Presidents Council, the GBC Assessment Committee, the Chair of Program Reviews completed during the current year, the Classified Chair, and the Director of Institutional Research, who would be in charge of Assessment Teams. The current Assessment Committee is working on assessing the General Education program. We are looking at ways to make assessment of student learning outcomes easier for faculty to conduct. Gary Hanington will bring a form to our next meeting that he has been working on. We also discussed that our committees role is not to develop an institutional assessment plan. Garry Heberer supports this idea, but no other committee members do. And, the faculty senate committee description states: This committee serves to periodically review and make recommendations relevant to the standards, educational quality, implementation, oversight, and assessment of the academic program College. This committee maintains any items necessary to assess learning outcomes. We discussed that we do not feel qualified to write an institutional assessment plan, but only the academic portion of an assessment plan. We will concentrate on this for the remainder of the school year and develop benchmarks for assessing student learning outcomes. We will meet again next week.
