If this is a GenEd class, include the appropriate GenEd objectives. In the boxes below, summarize the methods used to assess course outcomes during the last year. Include the criterion youll use to judge whether or not students have achieved the expected outcome. In the boxes below, summarize the results of your assessment activities during the last year. Include your judgement as to whether or not the criterion for student achievement has been met.In the boxes below, summarize how you plan to use the results to improve student learning.Outcome #1: 1) Students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of neural function Assessment Measure: Quizzes, Written Exams, Homework Criterion for achievement: 60% students scoring grade A & BResults: Exam 1 Total score 100 points Average score 48% High -85% Low-0% SD- 26.31 Average time 57 minutes/ 120 minutes Action Plan: Chapter 1 & 2 are the fundamental chapters of this class as it deals with the Anatomy and Physiology of the Nervous system. This module was open for 28 days. That means for the first 28 days of the semester the students had opportunities to watch my recorded teaching videos, videos provided by the publisher, power points and read the chapter but still students did not fare well in the exam. 15 students in the class scored below 60% & 2 students took less than 5 minutes to submit the exam and obviously they were very low scorers. This exam was open for 4 days. Only 7 students scored above 60%. On close analysis of the enrolled students, it was found that almost all of them were dual enrollment students. Plan of action -I will include more quizzes and homework for this unit. I am planning on having two separate exams based on chapters 1 & 2 separately for this module. All the subjects have their own jargon and maybe high school students were not ready for it and were overwhelmed with the terminologies used in Neuro Anatomy and Physiology. 2) Students will be able to articulate the general biological principles underlying neurodegenerative diseaseAssessment Measure: Quizzes, Written Exams, Homework Criterion for achievement: 60% students scoring grade A & BExam 2- Total score 100 points Average score - 78 High -100 Low- 0 SD- 30.97 Average time Not applicable as it was an open book exam. Exam 3 Total score 100 points Average score - 78 High -95 Low- 0 SD- 17.27 2 attempts Average time 84 minutes/ 180 minutes for open book multiple choice exam with 2 attempts.15 students scored more than 60%, 1 student below 60% and one student scored a zero on Exam-3. There was a marked improvement in the scores because these exams were open book and they had two attempts at the exams. Plan of action Once the student understood the rigors of this class, they were more prepared for the exams compared to the earlier exam-1. I am planning on continuing using this module as it is. GenEd students can be given a couple of open book exams so that they read the textbook and understand the material. 3) Students will be able to relate neural functions to societal issues including the cost, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disease.Assessment Measure: Quizzes, Written Exams, Homework Criterion for achievement: 60% students scoring grade A & BExam 4 - Total score 75 points Average score 82% High -957% Low- 0 SD- 15.58 2 attempts Average time 90 minutes/ 180 minutes for open book exam.17 students scored above 60% and one student had a score of zero. Plan of action In this module the student scored the best compared to the other modules. I am planning on continuing with this module without any change.TOTAL- 16 students Grades 6- A 5- B 3-C 5-D 4- F Criteria met - YESOverall, the students in this class did not do well as expected of a GenEd class partly because most of them were high school students and did not understand the rigors of college classes and were not prepared to put in the effort required to pass this class. Most of the students who failed did not put in any efforts at all. The 5 students who received D grade were originally F but after giving them one more opportunity to complete few quizzes and exams they were able to get a passing grade. I have completely overhauled this class and after reviewing multiple textbook I was able to pick up the textbook listed below. This is a good textbook with excellent supplemental materials but still not good for a GenEd class. My search for a good textbook continues.
