If this is a GenEd class, include the appropriate GenEd objectives. In the boxes below, summarize the methods used to assess course outcomes during the last year. Include the criterion youll use to judge whether or not students have achieved the expected outcome. In the boxes below, summarize the results of your assessment activities during the last year. Include your judgement as to whether or not the criterion for student achievement has been met.In the boxes below, summarize how you plan to use the results to improve student learning.Outcome #1: Demonstrate a comprehensive geographic and historical understanding of the Silk Roads from their earliest origins to the present. Assessment Measure: Final Exam Essay Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 100% of students (16/16) achieved a 70% or higher on the final exam essay. 2 students did not attempt this portion of the exam. Average: 89% Low score: 81% (27/33) High score: 96% (32/33) Criterion Met: YesAction Plan: For this part of the test I had students give a lecture on the entire history of the Silk Roads. Overall, students demonstrated a very good geographic and historical understanding of the Silk Roads. This assignment proved to be an excellent way for students to demonstrate what they learned holistically from the course. I plan to improve this by making sure they address connections with the present in their lectures. Outcome #2: Critically examine multiple primary source types from different eras and cultures at an introductory graduate-student level. Assessment Measure: Primary Source Reading Assignments Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 88% of students (16/18) achieved a 70% or higher on these weekly assignments. Average: 89% (63/70) Low score: 58% (41/70) High score: 99% (69.5/70) Criterion Met: Yes Action Plan: This assessment was based on discussion comments made on flipgrid for the first four weeks of class. Overall, students who participated demonstrated a high proficiency in analyzing primary source documents from different eras and cultures. This assignment proved to be a good way for students to demonstrate and enhance their understanding of how to read primary sources. I dont see any need to revise this assignment at this time. Outcome #3: Articulate some of the most important economic, political, cultural, and technological legacies of the Silk Roads.Assessment Measure: Final Portfolio Paper Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 100% of students (17/17) achieved a 70% or better on this assignment. 1 student did not attempt it. Average: 84% Low score: 70% (70/100) High score: 95% (95/100) Criterion Met: YesAction Plan: This assessment is based on an essay students had to write about the importance of the Silk Roads. Overall, students clearly articulated various Silk Road legacies. The essay question was broad which made it difficult for some students. In the future I plan to help them improve their overall performance by providing a little more guidance and narrowing the prompt so that I ensure they address all of the listed types of Silk Road legacies (ie: economic, political, cultural, and technological). Outcome #4: Research, write, and teach about the Silk Roads at an upper division college level.Assessment Measure: Material Culture Lecture Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 100% of students (18/18) achieved a 70% or better on this assignment. Average: 90% Low score: 76% High score: 96% Criterion Met: YesAction Plan: This assignment was a lecture students had to turn in. As part of their assignment they had to research, write, and teach. Overall, students did a very good job researching, writing, and teaching. In the future, I plan to improve this assignment by raising the standards and providing a presentation rubric prior to the assignment due date. I also plan to create a Chicago style citation quiz for them to help them perfect their bibliographies.
