Class/Course OutcomesAssessment MeasuresAssessment ResultsAny Changes Made as a Result of AssessmentIn the boxes below, summarize the outcomes assessed in your class or course during the last year. If this is a GenEd class, include the appropriate GenEd objectives. In the boxes below, summarize the methods used to assess course outcomes during the last year. Include the criterion youll use to judge whether or not students have achieved the expected outcome. In the boxes below, summarize the results of your assessment activities during the last year. Include your judgement as to whether or not the criterion for student achievement has been met.In the boxes below, summarize how you plan to use the results to improve student learning.Outcome #1-3 (Gen Ed): Demonstrate an understanding of the consequences of human actions in social and environmental contexts, and an ability to consider the ethical and practical implications of those actions. Demonstrate an ability to recognize the importance of creative human expression. Demonstrate an ability to recognize and respect the rights of the individual and to appreciate the complexity and variety of divergent attitudes, values and beliefs in society.Assessment Measure: Final Exam Short Answer Questions Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 92% of students (12/13) earned a 70% or higher Average: 88% (29/33) Low score: 63% (21/33) High score: 100% (33/33) Criterion Met: YesAction Plan: Though this assessment went fairly well, I still intend to make some changes to this assignment in the future. I can do better preparing my students for the short answer questions by facilitating class discussions around them throughout the semester. In future semesters, the instructor will use short answer questions again to evaluate the students but will have discussions about those questions before both the midterm and final exams. Outcome #4 (Gen Ed): Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural and historical heritage of contemporary society and the implications of this heritage.Assessment Measure: Final Exam Essay Question: Essay was 1/3 of Final Exam Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 100% of students (13/13) earned a 70% or better on this part of the Final. Average: 92% Low score: 27/33pts High score: 33/33 pts Criterion Met: Yes Action Plan: This assignment is currently designed as a revision of the students midterm essay. The essay midterm average was 77%, showing a marked improvement between the midterm and final exam. I use a similar strategy for my midterm and final exams in other classes and I believe that it works well in helping students focus their attention on this important learning outcome. I see no need for changes at this time. Outcome #5: Demonstrate an introductory level understanding of European geography and historical periodization through 1648, including the ability to show how pre-modern European history continues to influence our lives and world. Assessment Measure: Midterm and Final Exam Multiple Choice Questions: Multiple Choice makes up of the Midterm and 1/3 of the Final. Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 85% of students (11/13) earned a 70% or better on this part of the Midterm and Final. Average: 79% Low score: 50/84 pts High score: 81/84 pts Criterion Met: YesAction Plan: Overall students demonstrated an introductory understanding of European geography and history. I can help improve the geography scores on the test by requiring a weekly geography quiz and I plan to experiment with that in future semesters. I also intend to experiment with student groups writing test questions collaboratively as a way to prepare for the exams. Outcome #6: Demonstrate the ability to critically read and analyze diverse sources at the collegiate level.Assessment Measure: Weekly written responses to primary source readings: 13 ten-point assignments, 130 participation points total Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 85% of students (11/13) earned a 70% or better on their written responses. Average: 81% Low score: 41% (53/130) High Score: 96% (124.5/130) Criterion Met: YesAction Plan: Overall students who complete these assignments do very well on them, and I see no need to change the way the assignments are structured. Outcomes #7-8: 7. Demonstrate basic historical research skills, including how to find and integrate reliable sources into historical writing and teaching. 8. Demonstrate the ability to teach and collaborate with peers.Assessment Measure: UNESCO World Heritage Site Lecture Criterion for achievement: 66% of students achieve a 70% or better Results: 100% of students (13/13) earned a 70% or better on their UNESCO World Heritage Site Lectures Average: 88% Low Score: 70% (70/100) High Score: 97% (97/100) Criterion Met: Yes Overall the students demonstrated basic historical research skills as they prepared and taught lectures together about their choice of UNESCO world heritage sites. They tend to struggle most in understanding how to simplify and direct their presentations toward specific objectives (as opposed to just spouting off information for 5 minutes) and creating proper bibliographies. In the future I will help them improve by (1) finding better resources for how to create proper Chicago-style citations and incorporate them into an improved lecture, and by (2) re-writing the UNESCO assignment to clarify the importance of connecting content to lecture objectives.
