Yes_X_ No___ Complete and submit your assessment report electronically to your department chair. As needed, please attach supporting documents and/or a narrative description of the assessment activities. You may use as many or as few outcomes as necessary. Class/Course OutcomesAssessment MeasuresAssessment ResultsOutcome Results Analysis In the boxes below, summarize the outcomes assessed in your class or course during the last year. If this is a GenEd class, include the appropriate GenEd objectives. In the boxes below, summarize the methods used to assess course outcomes during the last year. Include the criterion youll use to judge whether or not students have achieved the expected outcome. In the boxes below, summarize the results of your assessment activities during the last year. Include your judgement as to whether or not the criterion for student achievement has been met.In the boxes below, please reflect on this outcomes results and summarize how you plan to use the results to improve student learning.Outcome #1: Apply the principles of scientific inquiry to identify connections between Historical Geology concepts. Gen Ed: Scientific Reasoning Assessment Measure: Exams Criterion for achievement: 70% of the student population earn a 70% or higherResults: 50% of the students earned a 70% or higher, however the class average was an 86%. Criterion Met: No1. Results Analysis: Exams in GEOL 102 are difficult and like other 4 credit science courses, exams are challenging. GEOL 102 content is BIG picture and it requires the ability to wrap your head around the vastness of geologic time and evolution these concepts are hard even for seasoned geologists. 2. Action Plan: Implement review sessions prior to exams to reinforce content. Incorporate Presentation/Paper into this assessment measure in the future. Outcome #2: Read and interpret graphs and data Gen Ed: Scientific Data InterpretationAssessment Measure: Laboratory Exercises Criterion for achievement: 70% of the student population earn a 80% or higherResults: 89% of the students earned an 80% or greater. Criterion Met: Yes1. Results Analysis: Students performed welly on Outcome #2 2. Action Plan: Continue to create more home-grown labs to help reinforce and expand on course content. Outcome #3: Discuss how earth and life evolve through geologic time. Gen Ed: Scientific ReasoningAssessment Measure: Paper/Presentation Criterion for achievement: 70% of the student population earn a 80% or higherResults: 88% of students earned an 80% or higher Criterion Met: Yes1. Results Analysis: Students performed favorably on Outcome #3. Im getting soft and started crying during two of my students presentations this year because they did such an amazing job! 2. Action Plan: Continue encouraging students to work on the project throughout the semester. Outcome #4: Identify fossil remains, rocks, and structures, and describe what they reveal about past environments. Gen Ed: Scientific Data InterpretationAssessment Measure: Laboratory Exercises Criterion for achievement: 70% of the student population earn an 80% or higher89% of the students earned an 80% or greater. Criterion Met: Yes1. Results Analysis: Students performed favorably on Outcome #4 2. Action Plan: Students really enjoyed the labs and some students commented that the software used in one of the labs could help with analyzing the distribution of fossils for the students selected geologic time period for the year end presentation. Notes: Covid Chaos impacted several of the students in GEOL 102. Despite efforts from the courses professor and Todd Hayden, two of the students disappeared from the course. One student withdrew and another student stayed in the course but did not participate following the transition to completely online. Two other students had major computer issues and one of those students conveyed he was much better suited to be in the classroom setting compared to online. That student was one of my top students in GEOL 101 and he will be transferring to UNR in the Fall to major geology. He is a dedicated student but was really hit hard by the online transition and working on school from home was difficult for him because his mom runs a day care out of their home. This course was completely redeveloped this semester with a new textbook, lectures, assignments and assessments. Im pleased with the changes and look forward to making tweaking the lectures and adding more content in the future. With the class now fully available online, I hope to increase enrollment so I can offer GEOL 102 ever Spring semester.
