Assessment Measure: Module Exams: The exams work well in determining how the students perceived course information and then apply it. Most of the items in the exams were at a knowledge and/or comprehension level due to the newness of the content. There also included application and analysis questions however. Criterion for Achievement: For all exams, the criterion for achievement used in this case was a grade of 76% or higher on each exam. Final Exam: The students took a summative final exam the last week in the 8 week semester. Criterion for achievement: All students met the benchmarks set for the exam. This benchmark was a level 2 competency described by the testing company ATI. Clinical Evaluation: The Clinical Evaluation was completed by faculty who observed student hands-on care in a clinical setting, most specifically the OB setting. The students were evaluated at the conclusion of their clinical rotations. This outcome deals with applying what they have learned in theory to the actual patient-care setting. The Clinical Evaluation was the tool utilized by faculty to evaluate this performance. Criterion for achievement: Criterion to judge whether or not a student met the expected outcome came at the end of the semester evaluation. The student had to be able to perform all criterion that were on this tool at a satisfactory level. Postpartum clinical packet: This packet summarizes, on paper, the nursing process that the student experienced as they cared for a particular postpartum patient. This packet in a way reveals the students thinking and planning process throughout the day of care. Criterion for achievement: A grade of 76% or higher on this clinical assignment. Nursery clinical packet: The student is responsible for researching information relating to the care, condition, and intervention for the newborn patient. The areas listed in this outcome are addressed in the packet. Criterion for achievement: A grade of 76% or higher on this clinical assignment. Labor & Delivery Clinical packet: The student documents the condition and the cares of a laboring patient throughout the part of the process that was observed during the clinical day. This may include a focus on the different aspects listed in the outcome as well. Criterion for achievement: A grade of 76% or higher on this clinical assignment ATI Virtual Clinicals: The students participate in the care of virtual patients in a virtual OB setting and answer questions according to the care of that individual. After they participate in the scenario, they then complete a written assignment that pertained to the patient in the scenario. A major component of the written work included care plan-type questions for the patient in the scenario. Criterion for achievement: A grade of 76% or higher on the written work and achieving a satisfactory rating on the scenario participation Simulation: The students participate as a group of 4-6 in the care of a simulated scenario in the lab relating to a high risk patient. Decisions and care are done by the students acting as primary and secondary nurses just as they would be in a real-life care setting. Criterion for achievement: Faculty observation of student performance and post-simulation evaluations of primary and secondary nursing students rated as Pass Outcome evaluation-completed by students: The students also completed a Course Outcome evaluation form where they indicated on a likert scale as to how they felt that they met each outcome for the course as well. Criterion for achievement: An average student rating of at least a three on each outcome Results: The average score of each of the 4 module exams is as follows: Exam #1: 95% Exam #2: 96% Exam #3: 93% Exam #4: 96% 92.3% of the students received a level 2 rating of competency on their first attempt of their ATI Maternal Newborn comprehensive final. The two students who received less than a level 2 on their first attempt, were able to achieve a level 2 or higher on their retake of a similar exam. All students met the criterion set for the Clinical Evaluations. All performed at a satisfactory level indicative of the stated outcome. All postpartum, newborn, and labor/delivery clinical care packets were passed with a 76% or higher. On the written work pertaining to the Virtual Clinicals all students scored above a 76% and all students obtained a rating of satisfactory after completing the scenario All students performed acceptably during the simulation. Successful completion was based on a pass/fail rating. All students passed. The students evaluation of whether they felt if they met the outcomes of the course indicated that most students did feel that they met all outcomes. For this outcome 53.33% of those who responded to the evaluation stated that they agreed with meeting the SLO and 40% stated that they strongly agree. Criterion Met: Yes/NoAction Plan: All assessment measures will be retained for the following year. This course was offered over an 8 week period. The students did extremely well on the summative final exam. I think having this course in the third semester aided in the students ability to think through test questions, clinical dilemmas, and scenarios. All assessment items will continue to be retained for this course. Outcome #2: Engage in clinical reasoning to make family-centered care decisions for maternal/newborn patients and families. Assessment Measure: Clinical Evaluation: Observing the student participate in direct patient care most accurately indicated achievement of this outcome. Different competencies listed on the evaluation pointed to this outcome and indicated the students ability to meet the outcome. Criterion for achievement: Satisfactory rating in the final clinical evaluation of the semester in areas related to the psychosocial and cultural aspects and needs of patient care. Clinical Packets: All clinical packets had components where the student had to differentiate the needs of the patient and decide on appropriate intervention for that patient. Criterion for achievement: 76% or higher on each of these packets. ATI Virtual Clinicals: The students participate in the care of virtual patients in a virtual OB setting and answer questions according to the care of that individual. Criterion for achievement: A grade of 76% or higher on the worksheets that were completed while the student participated in the virtual clinical. Module Exams: The exams work well in determining how the students perceived course information and then apply it. Most of the items in the exams were at a knowledge and/or comprehension level due to the newness of the content. There also included application and analysis questions however. Criterion for Achievement: For all exams, the criterion for achievement used in this case was a grade of 76% or higher on each exam. Final Exam: This is a comprehensive final designed by a company that did not publish the text used for the course. Criterion for achievement: : All students met the benchmarks set for the exam Course Outcome evaluation form: Students indicated on a likert scale as to how they felt that they met each outcome for the course. Criterion for achievement:An average student rating of at least a three on each outcome. Results: And all students met the different criterion on the Clinical evaluation that indicated this outcome with a satisfactory. Because the packets made the students think in terms of the nursing process, they were able to reveal their understanding of applying the nursing process in patient care through these packets. All students earned a 76% or higher on all packets. On the written work pertaining to the Virtual Clinicals all students scored above a 76% and all students obtained a rating of satisfactory after completing the scenario The average score of each of the 4 module exams is as follows: Exam #1: 95% Exam #2: 96% Exam #3: 93% Exam #4: 96% 92.3% of the students received a level 2 rating of competency on their first attempt of their ATI Maternal Newborn comprehensive final. The Pecha Kucha presentations of all teams were very well done. The grades of the teams ranged from 48/50 to 50/50. The students did very well delivering a precise piece of information in a limited amount of time. The average score of each of the 4 module exams is as follows: Exam #1: 95% Exam #2: 96% Exam #3: 93% Exam #4: 96% 92.3% of the students received a level 2 rating of competency on their first attempt of their ATI Maternal Newborn comprehensive final. During each clinical day, nursing faculty were required to review the students documentation that was don on an EMR system. Because this was an actual patient record, all entries had to be complete prior to the end of the clinical day. Students could not leave the floor until this documentation was complete and correct. During one of three clinical days, in post-clinical, the discussion topic of patient care technologies that were utilized specifically on the OB unit and how these technologies affected the care of patients was planned.
